Yellow brick road
« on: August 13, 2006, 12:03:46 am »
Hi  :)

While traveling thru the world of planeshift I couldnt help thinking how much fun
(perhaps only for me) it would be to have a real yellow brick road.
Nothing fancy as skills or commands or neat glyphs that activate social spells.
But a nice coloured road where people can refer to. Yes I realise there are already roads with a slight colour change (unless its my screen :P ).

It would also make finding a certain place more easy and enhance the feeling of a magical wonderous land. Because; -yes maybe i am the only one who has fond memories of The Wizard- anything could happen on that road, u never knew what might be next.
And I think it would be really nice being able to say:

´Oh yea, thats easy...just follow the yellow brick road...,

As for the idea, PS likes to be different, unique.  As such, something such as a yellow brick road probably won't ever be put in the game.  This isn't to say brick roads won't be there going from place to place, but not in the same sense that would relate as closely to the Wizard of Oz as having a big yellow brick road in game would.

Welcome to the forums!

As neko, up'ere, said we tend to go against the stream. If you want to post something original i'd be glad to hear your ideas.

haha thank u thank u , and yes i realise it wasnt the most original, but that wasnt really intented.
U can replace yellow by red etc ;) i shoudl have said a coloured road :)

And i soo much understand what PS tries to do, i can say with ease that i have a broad experience in RPG and MMORPG. BUT i admit it lacks originality altho hear me out for a second.

Before i posted this i talked about it ingame to see how people would react to it. Overal response was actualy positive, unless they were just being kind.

Let me rephrase ; a colour scheme for roads thus maps become less needed.

AND we LOOOOOVE the lollipop song  :D I can even go further and say i know the steps that come with it :-[

But i can understand the fact u liek more original ideas. I just thougt it could be usefull and fun. And i cant stop feeling im in OZ :D but ur comments are fair just and pollite. Just the way we like it.

Coloured roads you say. It would be really hard deeming realistic. See this, Planeshift want to create a virtual medieval world, unlike most of it's competitors. It should be as logical as it is for a character of this world and colored roads wouldn't, realistically, have been made by a very sane person.

Just imagine it. If you were a mayor would the first thing you do be to color the roads blue, black and purple in order to find the mall?

AAAh but there i disagree  :)

Because in my region natural roads have teh tendeny to be redish of the iron in the ground.

In some other region the road tends to be brownish yelloish because of sulfer or clay

Im pro ´realism´in the sense enviroment etc...but natural roads arent all grey.
And the posh neighboorhoods all have red bricks btw :D
Not trying to push here just going into the conversation  :)

Nono, I do want a discussion, only it shall be grounded on logical means, which, in this case, they are. The color depends on the material and the area. Right now grey roads seem more probable as greystone reside in the local terrain. Sandy environments, like on the BG road, should be yellow. Though bare in mind, they should be "naturally" yellow, not some jolly post it-expression of Picasso's Guerrica.

Mkay, what we have come to

- There are natural colored roads, toned by local minerals.
- Planeshift focuses in creating a real world, in a phantasy universe, as is possible. Unrealistic tones wont be taken seriously.
- We're grumpy rebels with the single goal of destroying you. No hard feelings.

of course natural colours  :)
:'( dont destroy me. perhaps its best to delete the post?

Altho my logical side tells me ur being sarcastic......are u ???

but i still stand by the fact that where i live rich people have coloured bricks  :D
I dont really see how this conversation can go on cause it has been answered.

Do realise this is the internet funny remarks dont translate well

Is this serious?? :o

edit: Perhaps it might be interesting to have some parts of a city have coloured bricks for instance IF there was a castle the roads around the castle really deserve a different colour since people living near the castle wouldnt settle with the bricks the rest of the proletarians have. Streets around a pub would respectivly deserve a different colour same for slums. If u strive towards realism u should concider that in real life not all streets are a like.
And being honest im yet to encounter a country where architects didnt try to reflect the wealth of an area thru the appearance of the streets. Does that make sense ? :)

Your standpoint is very well marked. I can't help but agree that somehow, somewhere one will see colored cobblestones from the lake in a neaby fish village.

Geeeeze, I don't know.

What we need to remember is I agree that colored roads could and can be a part of Planeshift (they, partly, already are) not to be mistaken with your first idea. I will look for some pictures and see if we can come up with something. We will need some shapes and concepts in order to look apon how and where this could be taking place.
