The server is failing, but I have no firewall or router
« on: August 16, 2006, 09:38:02 am »
It tells me failed and unreachable, even though I'm fairly sure I havent got a firewall, and I'm certain that there is no router or restrictions thereof.

I know that the server is up, because I've checked it time and time again. I've been trying to get this working for 24 hours, and no cigar. It should be noted that I am a fairly new user of Linux. I started out a month or so ago.

I'm running Mandriva Linux 2006.0 on a Dell optiplex gx240, ‎Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.50GHz, 768mbs of SDRAM.
2.6.12-24mdk-i586-up-1GB
Kernel source
Nvidia drivers

Any idea anyone?   ???

I'm not familiar with Mandriva, but most of the distros tend to install a firewall and give you a number of options how much protection it provides. It might be one of the reasons.

Also are you sure that your ISP is not blocking UDP ports, especially the port number 7777? Some might be doing it to block p2p file sharing.

And the last question, can you ping laanx.fragnetics.com?

Yes, I can ping it. And my boss told me that there was no restrictions to this connection.

I'm going to ask one of my friends whos a mandriva guru about the firewall stuff. I want to play :)

This sounds really odd... if you catch me in the planeshift build channel I can fire up my test server and show you how to try to connect.  If that doesn't work we'll know something is up with your connection.

First make sure, that You are using correct version of PlaneShift client. Older versions will show that connection fails because of changes in network code.

Try to disable Linux firewall. Usually shorewall is installed in Mandriva, the command to completely turn it off is:

shorewall clear

(You must be root to do this).

If it still does not work, there must be something between Your machine and Laanx server, which blocks required traffic. I use Madriva 2006.0 too and I have no problems with PS at all.

if pinging laanx gives a pong it might be because it blocks planeshift... or he needs to restart the client... happens sometimes
