And, yes, it's a step in the learning process. I'm already confident in making textures.

hah yea! I'm not confident yet!... karyuu as you may have noticed? (maybe you didn't seem them all??) mine definately wasn't 100% original... so untill I spruce up my texturing abilities, lets keep mine a secret eh? :whistling:
Mine wasn't either, but I believe i'm progressing.

Electronically works just as well - snail mail isn't necessary for such things.

The texture is for PlaneShift and PlaneShift only. Those of you who somehow worry that it's going to be used for something else without your knowledge should put your fears to rest.
I had no fear the art would be used somewhere else.

I just wanted to know what would happen next, and when.

I tried very hard to make my rat fit in with the style of the rest of the artwork.

So I worked to correct things that were wrong with the original, rather than trying to create a new thought altogether.

I like my result very much.

I think my rat looks like something that belongs in PS, and it is hard to wait, rather than just share it.

Unfortunately the contest itself was about the latter - trying to create a whole new texture.

Still, this won't be the only chance our community artists will have to contribute :]

Really, Karyuu?

You mean that a rat that looks out of place, and does not fit in with the style, color values, contrast and shading of the rest of the art, is more likely to be a winner?

Damn, I wish you had told me.

I thought that keeping the PS look, would be a good thing.

You are assuming things about the entries :] Why does an entirely new texture automatically not fit in with the style of PS?

By the way - Verrliit, and many others: Which kind of "winner" do you expect?

CrystalSpace supports a variety of skins, and modifications. There is no need for exactly one additional texture, there can be many more new skins at once. And if you are not satisfied with the choice... there are many alternatives out there! ;)

I would like to think everyone was a winner.

You are all winners.  You all got the experience of creating a texture.  Some were better than others, and will get in game (maybe?), but everyone definitely gained something from it.  Now lets all hug and say what we're thankful for.

Verliit: Keeping the PS look is important, and will likely play a role in deciding what gets in-game (if anything).  However, 'fixing' an already good texture is not the way to go about it.  It was given as a reference, to make it possible, and to demonstrate the level of quality of what is already in-game.  The goal of the contest was to create a completely new texture.  Considering this is an official PlaneShift contest, I think it's safe to say that keeping it within the PS style was implied.

I just got the go-ahead from Talad to post the winners of the contest. We had alot of great entries, way more than I expected! I didn't know such talents lurked in the community ;]

Karyuu did everyone a huge favor and put all the textures on rats for display, which must have been a ton of work. Thank you Karyuu <3

Now without further ado, I present the...

Congratulations to Moogie, Minetus + Induane, and Venae Rell. I have to agree with ArcaneFalcon, though:

See you next time ;]

Not bad... Funny to see that several people had similar ideas, but different results. For example, "albino" and "different eye count" must have been obvious variations.

How about collecting all the textures at ps-mc for those who would like to check them as mods?

*Hops in from a link Kary sent*

...Wow. I was really, really not expecting this. My first submission was a little tongue-in-cheek, and I was sure Talad wouldn't take it seriously because it looks kinda zombie-fied.. xD But actually I wrote them a little history that explains the appearance, they arn't really undead... erm, and as for the other one, that turned out rather plain, but I did like masking the third eye and pretending it wasn't there. Eeeevil third eye, thou dost not exist!!

I'd like to jump on the opportunity to say congrats to everyone else who entered, not just the other winners. These skins are fantastic work. There's so much hidden talent here, and I hope you guys had as much fun with this as I did. I particularly -love- Minetus's winning entry (those eyes are gorgeous!) and Krann Omins' one because it looks like a poisonus frog, which is so much different from the others. :) I have to admire Wired_Crawler's entry also because it looks like he put a huge amount of effort into lining the details up between different areas of texture, and I know that's a tough cookie to do. Kudos to you, dude.

I loved this contest idea, and it was nice to hop back in to PS and get involved with it again. There should definitely be many more contests in the future, not just for skinning, but perhaps music composition or meshbuilding or something. I think the extended deadline must have helped a lot of people, I know it helped me.

Thank you :)

The extended deadline did help a great deal I think.  Good work takes time as they say! :D  I really hope they continue these contests.  Its a good way to get some extra content without a ton of work from the 3d and 2d devs who are probably already at max workload and  I love the open feel a contest like this brings to PlaneShift. I'd love to see some meshbuilding or music composition ones as well! :D I've worked on a few songs myself by tuning my guitar extremely odly and trying to add some uniqueness to the sound  - somethign light and peaceful :D

I though your one entry was a robot rat at first though (no offense intended) so I got a good kick out of that until I looked closer ;)

Congradulations to everyone, really I thought looking back at it that there were several others that could have made it ingame as well.  I agree that Wired_Crawlers entry was wonderful as well!

Thanks for a great competition everybody!

Maybe more will get in besides the winners? There should be runners up too!
