the prices for vista
« on: August 31, 2006, 09:33:01 am »
A random surfer found by coinsidence the prizes on the new windoez vista on the canadian microsofts hp

vista home = 275.777 usd
vista ultima = 448.227 usd

quite outrageous, imagine that a couple have to upgrade os, and only knows about windoez, maybe they only need 10% of what is on vista... that would mean they are paying for something they don't need, which would be a robbery.

Rip off. They advertise it like it's something that everyone -needs- as well.

The complete list:
VersionCompleteUpgrade
Vista Ultimate349199
Vista Business269179
Vista Home Premium239139
Vista Home Basic19999

So for me an upgrade to Vista would be 99-139, the OEM versions will probably be cheaper though ;)
And yes, it's a rip off, 9/10 of Vista's functions were discontinued!
The only 2 remaining features are the new GUI (yay...) and the "improved" kernel...

If I would buy Vista, it's only going to be because of the DirectX 10 games, because MS is kindly making DX10 Vista only  X-/
(where are you when we need you, Wine)

Well that is just the point, eventually everyone will. Key word: DirectX 10, which will not run on XP.
And yes, there's the linux people... it's just not an alternative to gamers. Most games on linux are crap, Cedega is always one step behind (although they really are doing a great job :) ), and that's just it...
No wonder Microsoft does everyhting to keep their monopoly in place, and the sources closed... ;)

This is not the entire cost, I'm afraid. All prices - regardless of version - also include exactly one soul.

I guess that in a certain way that oultrageous price is a good thing. Maby they'll push morre people towards Linux because paying 400$ for blue screens is just silly :P
IMO if you aren't a gamer, you don't need windows. And if you are, well, XP will give you just the same blue screen satisfaction as Vista will.

PS: Just remember the most usefull command Microsoft has implemented in their OSs: format c:
Oh! And the most usefull key combination "Ctrl-Alt-Del"

Else there's always reactOS... a whole new operating system open source... and should be based on windoez... all made by reverse engineering

ReactOS doesn't actually do anything at the moment.
The latest release only allows you to open up wordpad, or browse with firefox.
I think they're going to use Wine for the Direct3D stuff, but I'm not sure.

ReactOS and Wine work closely together to share code.  Wines registry editor is directly from the reactos code, and reactos already uses wine for its 32 bit subsystem.

It's called Linspire now, because of a lawsuit with MS.
