Seen the ratings?
« on: September 05, 2006, 07:11:31 pm »
I have decided not to play ps yet as i agree with the ratings on some sites.....70% of the ratings were below 4/10

The reasons for this were:

Lagging
Crashing ALOT
Hard to download
Time consuming download

I dont know what people here think but i agree, i finally got it working (go mum!) but it lagged alot, i thought it was because i had detail set to high, so i set it to about 5-20....it still lagged and crashed alot. I think upgrading it fast will make it more popular, lets face it, 190 players is ABISMAL.

Good thats its free but get it upgraded faster as i know we are the testers for it at the mo, but its been what 2 years and it is on Version 0.3.....thats about 6 more years to get to version 1...

Just my 2 cents, well pennies i'm english

Thoughts?

P.S Whenn it did work, and the ideas you lot have for it, it looks amazing, is easy to play and its just fantastic...the downloading/laggin/crashing weighs it down like a brick. Get that sorted, and alot of people wont care about the lack of stuff in it i think

You forget that we do this as a fun hobby project, not as a job. We have real jobs and real lives that take priority, and we know how to prioritize. So you're right, this means that PlaneShift doesn't progress as fast as commercial projects may, but we're not in any specific hurry. We're not racing with anyone, and we generally prefer the type of players who realize how we work and understand and appreciate what we do.

If you're not enjoying the game at this point in time, come back when we are a few versions ahead and see if you'll have a better time. You are always welcome :}

Oh i understand you have other lives and its a hobby thing.

Hehe i have looked around and WOW=needs about a £500 comp to even think about playing it, same for everquest, and guild wars. AND they cost!?!?!?!?!?! Planeshift, for value, is the best and i plan to check again every version hopefully.

But i know you are trying out the download on different things.....and i guess its working, but not very well if theres only 190 people (there the ones that downloaded it right)

Oh i havnt really thanked you for trying to help me get it up and running. Other times you get directed to a list of instructions  X-/

But i will definatly come back and get my friends on it.

p.s i didnt want to uninstall it but with it not working well and taking up so much room on the laptop (coulnt get it to work on main comp yet) my mum made me uninstall it  :thumbdown:

Any sites in particular? I saw a few rates that seemed pretty fair- we don't have as much quests as some games, or as many minigames, so it's understandable why they'd rate them higher. Give us time and we will  :D

But you also have to keep in mind that Planeshift is a completely differnt goal then other games. We don't care(as much) about fast action, and slaying anything that might have lewtz. Roleplaying is more important here, and some people ... well, don't look for it while rating.
player -> gm -> dev -> bum

There are way more than 190 people actually playing the game. But not everyone can log on at the same time because of their different schedules. Some can only log in on the weekends for example, or just once a week, or for just an hour each day. If I had to take a guess, it would be more than 500 individual dedicated players logging on at various times. But even it our in-game playerbase is small, that's understandable because of our progress, and our progress is dictated by the amount of free time we have. We're not in a race to get more players - more developers is more like it ;)

I hope your not mad or somthing cause you sound it.

Oh cool about the players, and i wish i could help but i know diddlysquat about game mechanics.

I understand is it dictated by the ammount of free time you have, and then if someone isnt pulling their weight, the whole thing collapses.

i appreciate it and i know this and accept it. I'm not saying to get a move on and get it better, i am giving my 2 pennies.

Yes i know you can say "But we knew this anyway why bother telling us?" but erm....hmmm i duno. I think its cause i like to complain or sumthing lmao. On a serious note though it was for the people who wernt aware that they are persavering even though some dont like it...yeah i guess it was a useless topic really  :(

I don't think it's useless - sometimes you just need to explain what you feel is wrong :} We don't mind at all if someone repeats an opinion that we know, if they do it as you did - without yelling or pulling anyone's hair out ;)

Hmm. I dunno, i think most of those siute would probably be based mainly around playability without taking the  community and RP aspect of Planeshift into  cinsideration.
granted the server seems a bit whacked out and its kinda annoying having to dowwnload the whole game via bittorrent, but  I'm not expecting a complete game with a hardcore server.  I play shadowbane for that.  For  this I like to relax, I talk to people and kill a few thing on the side. I like to see the expansion as it continues and the additons etc.
If i was good enough I would contribute, but  I'm looking at alot of work until I'm able to come up with a decent  portfolio of stuff.
newbie  moddler and artist just doesnt cut it. Which I'm actually REALLY pleased about. You see some  concept art and models for some games which look like they have been done by someone who doesnt have alot of skill with a pencil or 3D program.
I think I'm trying to say that  you have to base the rating of the game  based on the circumstances and the current point of it, if that makes any sense, rather than bouncing it off MMO's  which have a "constant" development.
Not to sound angry or anything, I'm just voiceing my opinion on the matter,

I'm sorry, but if your computer can't download or play this game, that's your computers fault.

Now i know i'm a bit biased, being i have a high end computer, But if your computer won't let you download the files, that's mostly your fault.

1) Get DSL or a faster internet source, if you can afford it, so as to download large files faster.

2) Buy a nice computer with atleast 2 Gigaherz Processor, 1 gig of Ram.

3) A 256 meg graphics card wouldn't hurt either. ;)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I mean the computer i just mentioned above isn't even high end, i consider it an average computer, and if you could afford it, buy a nicer one than the one stated above.
And you'll have very little problems playing this game.
I don't crash much, and it only happens when the server Hiccups, lol   ;D.
I'll admit, it does crash, more than average games, but you'll get used to it.
I frankly feel the dev's don't really need to change anything as to the specs of the game.
The only thing i would change is that @#$!$# :@#\@%$$# server, omg I HATE that @#!@# !#@$#@$ !#$%$#@ :@#\!
PLEASE, HAVE MERCY, destroy the fragnetics server, please God.
I know you guys arn't rolling in money and it's hard for you to afford a server.
That's why i'll live with the server, but i'm openly going to admit I hate that piece of #@@#.
lol.
When i figure out how to make my backup computer into a server i'll gladly donate it to PS.
actually it isn'tthe server itself that is giving the trouble. it's a nice little box and by far better then any of us can afford. it is the the software that we are running on it that is giving the trouble. as for donating a home server to ps. it would be better to donate the monetary value i fthe box. simply becuase professional level/commerical level equipment/support is better then anything available at the home level.
And it downloads but the prob is it takes ages, there are problems with mirrors, bittorrent. Just because you can dwnload and play it really well does not make all the other people retarded
The thing is, Planeshift is unique because it isn't (just) an arcade game.  It has a strong focus on authentic roleplaying, and it has a community which encourages real roleplaying through events and guilds and storylines.  Further, people actually help eachother out in game, which is also pretty special IMO.
