Languages?
« on: September 13, 2006, 09:21:20 pm »
I used to play a game called "Rubies of Eventide". I very much liked the idea of the way you could type /"language name here" and you can speak to people of the same race, in the race's language.

Also, if you practiced talking the language, you could gain levels and be able to speak different race's languages at different languages, so you can ask where the toilet or bathroom is, such as in high school french.

I think it may add a new elemet to the game. Please review it.

i like this sugestion alot :) ...

maybe "yiliakish" ? lol could be something around the basic english and then the other races could be based on diferent languages, or unused dead languages like latin :p and coptic
see extinct languages at wikipedia :) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinct_language

this would also add profession for translators, language learning skills..

Exactly the kind of thing i was thinking, but should make up a new language for each race, otherwise it may clash with law, an Enki suddenly speaking Latin or old English :P

why not take a classic RPG approach with it and have the languages of the races, so we have kran, enki, ylian, xacha, stonebreaker, hammerwielder, diablo, ynwnn(i'm usuming this would be a cross-language between the 2 races which make up a ynwnn), demorian, nolthrir, klyros. and then have languages for alignments, stick with the basics of neutral, lawful and chaotic i would imagine. that gives the option to learn many languages with which to talk to other characters, and would also make RPing in hydlaa more fun as it would feel like a multicultural city when you read the chat box.

i dont think those extinct languages are copyrighted... anyways still if to use someone should check it  :surrender:

@nikodemus, how i was thinking it is more like a encryption, like if someone in public would want to have a chat but didnt want every one to understand it it could use one of those languages, like if they existed they wouldnt be a dominant speech

and the way to speek it would be typed in english and then translated over.. the people who would be able to read it could have a icon in front of the phrase in the chat box to translate it or it could be automatic

^^^that was what I assumed he meant. Like in alot of tabletop RPGs where even though you are all speaking english ooc, certain characters who can speak other languages can have conversations with each other without the other ppl understanding IC. In PS this would be implemented (at least the way I saw it) So that in the chat window those who understood would see it in english, whereas those who did not would see the untranslated version of the language so pure kran etc

The problem I see with that idea is that some people might want to actually say stuff in that language, and if they hear that language as English automatically they won't be able to know how it works.

I guess, but then if you read french do you then know how to pronounce it? As this game doesn't have audio of talking it would be very hard to try and speak in the languages of the races anyway. If you wanted to write in the languages you could always ask a non-speaking player to translate it it for you. Or if the idea was implemented i'm sure that if it would be viewable in game to non-speakers anyway that the devs would provide you with the translations if you asked them.

That was what I ment. If anyone did play rubies of eventide you will know what I mean. Its basically a load of jumbled up letters if someone talks in a language you dont know, and if you do know it, it just looks like english, but noone else will know what you are saying. Unless they are of the same race of course.

I've also played Rubies of Eventide, the language filter? I didn't use it that often but it worked. I could speak "orcish" and no one else but orcs and ogres would understand me. Higher levels of learning unlock new words and meanings. Every race starts out with 100 points in their native language and the common tongue. Higher levels, in future patches, will give you the possibility of writing down and read the language on a parchment for example.

Enkidukai's could speak "Enkidukai"
Diaboli could speak "Diablo"(?)
Mixed races could speak the race's language they belong to. F.ex: Ynnwynn either speaks Diaboli or Dermorian.
Ylians, perhaps Krans, would speak the default language, which everyone speak. This is the same for humans in "RoE".

Yadda, yadda, yadda. Etc and so forth...

I thought more about this and these are my language suggestions:

All races would speak their own language, xacha and ylian although both human have different origins so they would have different languages.
Ylian
Xacha
Stonebreaker
Hammerweilder
Demurian
Nolthrir
Klyros
Enki
Ynynn (a cross between Diaboli and demorian so each race would understand some words in this language)
Lemur

As well as each of their race languages, every character would speak the Common tongue (regular english.) There would also be languages for religion:
Talad
Laanx
Black flame
(atheists have no organised religion and therefore would know no religious language.)

Characters would have the option to train in any of the race languages from any NPC of the race which they wish to learn, religious languages would be trained only after the character has proved they are worshippers of that religion. Characters can understand as many race languages as they wish but may only understand 1 religious language as this is a gift from the deity/entity they worship and will be revoked if religious beliefs change. S well as race and religious languages other languages may be learned at characters discretion in order to fit in with guild allegiances, these would be vocation orientated and would be defined something like as follows:

Crafter
Trader
Mercenary/Warrior
Theif
Beggar
Alchemist/Herbalist
Mage

This would allow many different forms of interaction which would define even more tightly the PC as a unique person with unique skills, this is my idea as it stands now, if more ideas come to me I may add to this.

Yes, it did work. Thats why I liked it. It was easy to do aswell, such as for 'enki' language, you would have to type /enki then your message.

Alot of these ideas are good. I hope the devs have a chance to go over this.

Ummm...errrrr...ALL RACES, you say? Where are the mighty Kran? IMHO, the kran are the one race that truly deserve either their own langauage or can understand all langauages. After all, the Kran are the ones who have the MOST striking differences in physiology and anatomy.

Perhaps a compromise would be that Kran, being created by Talad, can understand all of the languages associated with the races of Talad.

Maybe low-frequency vibration can be 'sketched out as a future potential? Of course, this leads in my mind to echo location, long-distance-speech, or sound attacks (I know, I know...that idea is stolen from Dune and the Wierding Way, but it can be changed enough to suit the Kran - and by 'suit the Kran, I mean ME!)
