Animal hide cloaks.
« on: September 14, 2006, 01:17:27 am »
I don't think anyone's thought of this before, I searched the forum. First time starting a topic btw, bear with me.

Think of a tefu/rat/ulber/beast hide. Not very desirable, right? You can only sell it to the vendor in oja (long walk for us ylianians) and they're only used for quests or selling.

NOW think of someone WEARING the hide as a cloak!   :woot:
It'd kill two birds with one stone, making hides wanted and filling the cloak position! all you'd have to do is make it so that the hide is equippable, give it some stat bonuses, use the old hide graphic with few to nil changes and hey presto! paste it onto someone's back. This seems rather easy to do, just reformat an old item, not making a new one from scratch, and it'll keep cape and cloak freaks from posting numerous topics on the subject of cloaks (not that they wouldn't still do it if it was implemented  ::)).
Does anyone really know if this is possible and/or easy? I just think it'd look cool for temps, not sure what it'd take to implement it.

Jauffre

P.S: Lots of barbarians go around in hides. Could be an enki thing for hide cloaks. No offense to vegan enkis  :P
P.P.S: Forgive me for starting a new topic on clothing, I just didn't think this would quite compare to all the other ideas out there.

Sounds like a good idea to me, I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement tho, I think there may be some modelling involved to make the cloak fit onto a character, but hey, that's not down to me, so good idea.

It's not quite as simple as that. The old model couldn't be used (probably) and a new model needs a new texture. Plus, people don't much like cloaks that look like they've been dipped in starch, so someone would need to make them "billow" using cal3d and that needs a skeleton for the model.

So yeah, they might as well just implement "real" cloaks. Still a good idea, but not precisely a time saver as far as I can see.

Yeah, creatinga model for cloaks would be pretty intensive. It would be best to design a default cloak model and then create alternates based on the model.

Though personally, I probably wouldn't mind all that much if the cloak seemed a bit stiff at first. You could create a rudimentary test cloak that looks stiff, upgrade it to a flapping one, then use that model to create variations like tefusang skin cloaks.

Though for now, allowing those hides to be used in making leather goods would be a really good idea. Like using rat hides to create the generic leather items that NPCs sell. Tefusang leather torso armor would be a bit more protective and Ulber leather torso armor would be the best.

Of course... to do that the devs would have to make leatherworking tools and equipment and stuff for the game... heh. Alot of work any way you look at it.

I'm not talking a fully finished cloak, more like The Shadow Nose's rudimentary cloak idea. You could use the skin cloaks as a 'test' idea, get all the mechanics worked out for the real cloaks, and come back later and mod the old ones.
And of course it'd give meaning to almost worthless items...
Also for us armor junkies, I'd wear a jester hat if I knew it'd give me more armor  X-/

Still, if it doesn't save time, we can scrap the idea.  :surrender:

I like the idea, I think a startch dipped cloak is better than no cloak at all.

Maybe the cloak could rap all the way around you and hang over the front of you.  That way it would be more difficult for your opponent to tell what kind of armor you are wearing.  I like cloaks, they make everything seem more mysterious.

Maybe we could introduce knitting skills.

Harnquist could sell shears, we could have a weaving shed with spinning wheels and we could try our hand at shearing Ulbernauts.

Arka imagines herself in this year's Ulber and Cashmere woollen cloak with matching accessories (knitted axe-sheath) and macrame belt.

:)

Arka

(Nice idea about the cloaks, by the way)

I think the whole idea of this was just a quick fix.  Sure knitting is a good idea, but I'd have to say that it's :offtopic:

Love that idea!   I always wanted a pair of ulber socks for at night. My feet get really cold, but that is probably because I sleep under a tree.

Jauffre Martin I like your idea.

I like this idea. It would be great if this can be implemented in game.

Also, is your name from Oblvion? a Mix of Jauffre and Brother Martin?
