a bit of commercial for PS
« on: February 12, 2003, 11:10:05 pm »
Some ppl may know the magazine called pc zone(its very popular in belgium and netherlands and.....)
Well any how i\'m a \'hooked\' reader of their magazine, and especially the online part(mmorpg\'s).
So once on a beautiful day i was sitting in the sun and came on the idea of e-mailing to the autor of the online part in pc zone, asking if he could write a preview of PS.
So i waited a few days and then i got the response that he is very interested in this project and is willing to write a preview in one of the next releases of PC zone, so all readers of it watch out cuz there is a preview on the way. Lets hope PS becomes a bit more popular around these places 8o

I am a pretty avid gaming hobbiest and I have aquired a few connections in the industry over the years.  As a result, I got an advanced copy of the article and it goes something like this:

i asked my friend and he agrees that planeshitf is not fun cause me and him had to download for 6 hours then we had to wait for 3 hours cause some guys named binary and cubbs said that the gates open and monsters come in and then you can get rune armor then. so we had to play for 3 hours until we decided we had to search the internet for cheats, but CheatCC didn\'t have nun! this game is suck for free, cause we had to wait 3 hours and the gates only shook a couple times because the monsters weren\'t strong enuf to get thru, or because there was already 10 people fighting them because they were high levels! geez jagex you guys need to think of the little guy for once! thanx for the help tho, binary and cubbs! but my friend is still POED! LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL olOLOLOL

On a serious note, I think it\'s good that PS is geting some professional recognition, but is the game to the point that we want game critics poking around?

uh...Planeshift has already been in one magazine, so I do not really see the point in arguing this

Anyways, I think its good because it might draw in more people who can work for the team who otherwise might not have seen it...and if their REAL critics they will not be like the little kids who post the things as you just said, and as Tionusena said in his post, the guy was interested (good job by the way :) )

For some publicity we are also planning to contact different magazines, but before we do that we want something to show them, like MB.
Even that is not a lot yet, but atm there is actually nothing much to show the world except for a 6 months old demo...

So Ps might show up in more magazines sooner or later, but its always nice to have fans around helping out :)

From my understanding, PS had a small \"stat\"-like column in the first issue of a small magazine.  This sounds more like a full-blown article.  Also, I have no fear that the critic will be immature about his preview. My quote was just a joke and not a comment on what I think he will say.  I am just echoing the concern that widespread publicizing was set for the CB release.  While MB is pretty neat looking, I don\'t think I would call it \"impressive\" (as compared to retail demos I\'ve seen) just yet.

BTW, I didn\'t mean to disparage your efforts Tionusena, good work.

I agree with kinshadow on this.  We should keep our \"real\" publicity to a minimum until at LEAST the MB release has had a couple iterations and is nice and stable.  I would be fine with not publicizing it until after CB comes out, personally.

It will take some time before the author will write a preview of PS so by time it will appear in the magazine (maybe in 6 months), PS will have involved alrdy in some ways( i hope   :)) ) So he will see alrdy a bit more what PS has to offer then if he would write the preview now. And i dont think he will have a lot of criticism because the game will be very good(i hope) and if not, the game is totally free!!! thats alrdy a great advantage towards other mmorpg\'s and i am sure he will write it many times, the fact that it is FREE! :D

I guess there will be hardly any problem with advertising the game when its playable - though the word \'free\' will attract quite some variety of players so it wouldnt be bad to work on a proper image to reflect the ideas of the game before you do the marketing.

Well i think right now you devs are better off if you have only a few 100 players waiting for the game than a few 1000.

Ow I maybe have something that is important for you (could be that you already know about it):

On http://www.mporgd.com Planeshift is listed in the search database as \'Software Price: Pay\' - though not in the profile itself - nevertheless when you do a \'all free\' search it wont show up.

This is how it looks:
Planeshift
Genre:  RPG
Time :  Real Time
Platform:  Linux | Mac | Windows
Player Rating:  NR
Status:  Development
Free Trial Available:  False
Interface:  3D Third Person
Software Price:  Pay
Client Type:  Stand alone
Subscription Price:  Will be free

Ah, thanks, I send an email to MPOGD and asked them to correct this :)
<Worf> These are the moments when my ego gets put back on the ground. I use linux for quite some time, and am soon 2 years maintainer of a linux distribution. I started to think I would be good at it. But then I tried to get planeshift running.

Even though there was no game or even a demo in sight at the time, I don\'t think the publicity harmed PS in any way, probably only did good - generating interest, and without it I may not have found my way here, then where would I lurk? ;)

Oh, I didn\'t realize there was another magazine.  I was refering to the Massive Online Gaming magazine that is featured in the news on the main PS site.  Do you remember the name of the earlier mag (so I can grab it at a garage sale if I see it :D)?

EDIT: I just saw it in the older news.  Was it only in the UK PC Gamer version?  I\'ll have to check my old issues to see if it was in the US too.

It may have brought you here, Kada, (which we are all thankful for of course), but it is my code they are testing and it is my responsibility when it crashes (actually the coding team\'s).  I want anyone who looks at it to walk away impressed.  That\'s all.

I totally understand Venge, and I know I would feel exactly the same in your shoes. But this project has been so unique in the way it has been so open from the beginning - a very brave move really, and that\'s part of it\'s charm, how can you hope to have controlled publicity of something of this nature?

BTW we\'re already impressed, by the existing code and the future possibilities, or we wouldn\'t still be here ;)
