Instruments
« on: February 14, 2003, 12:57:06 am »
Im not sure if this has been thought of, I searched for it on the boards and didnt find anything, so here goes.

Could there be instruments in the game that you can buy, like Ocarinas, Flutes, small Guitars, just basic instruments that would fit in planeshift, these could be used to signal something, like an attack or maybe guilds could use them for secret signals, like when Robin Hood used his horn to call his men.  It could also be used to gain money, people could go around as traveling minstrals, there are 2 ways this could work, you could either equip the instrument and have buttons assigned to notes, or you could \"learn\" a song, or possibly write one youself, and you equip the instrument and it plays it for you, but now, this adds another stat, and bath to go by, the minstril path and stat.  If #2 were used, then you would need a certain stat lvl to be able to write your own music, which would simply go on a peice of paper for you to play later.

I think this is an excellent idea! A sort of trumpet or bugle would also be useful in battle, to signal attacks and retreats and such. Also, you need someone to play Revilie in the morning and Taps at night atthe barracks!  ;)

Enter the devil\'s advocate.

Great idea, but it could get quite annoying. There is always someone in a game like this who plays just to bother other people. They get some kind of enjoyment out of it. I\'ve not played an online game that didn\'t have these people. The last thing I\'d ever want to do is equip one of them with a horn!

This could still be a great feature if it were carefully controlled. If musically talented players composed their own themes and wanted to play them in the game, maybe they could submit them for the next patch. If the player was in good standing and the song was good, he could play it as a traveling minstral. That\'s something no one else has.

Well, yea...of course there will be instruments, there are gonna be bards (as a job), so what would you do without instruments?

Skill could have more to do with the ability to play the write notes at certain speeds and such.  There could be soundproof studios for practice, or secluded niches and gardens.  Another thing, bad music could attract nasty monsters, so it wouldn\'t be good to just go out into a place where people are adventuring and just annoy them.  Inside a city, however, it would just mingle with the natural din of city life and.

...they could always have a feature to report bad music to an NPC guard, where upon once enough votes are cast against this traveling annoyance, he would be slain on the spot, or locked up in jail, or some other form of punishment, sound stupid, but somethin has to be done if people wanna be annoying with it.

This is so very strange...
I were thinking about this just yesterday, and I even began writing a thread about it, but then I realized that I was too tired so I decided to wait until today...
And today someone brought up the thread, 8o
strange...well anyway....
Wouldn\'t it be good if players could import MIDI-files into PS? The MIDI file could only consist of one single track, and the signals from the file should then be transformed into whatever instrument you used.
Many players will then be able to cooperate by playing different instruments.
This could also be combined with the \"press the buttons in the right order/second\" to make it sound good.
Players should then be able to play their own songs, and MIDI-files that only consist of one single track won\'t take up much space, right?
When you come into the area where you can hear the music the file will download, and will then be deleted  when you step out of the area again :)

BTW 1. You should be able to sing as well. Players could even start up their own choir.

BTW 2: Don\'t forget the drums, and keep in mind that PS isn\'t located on earth so guitars and the like cannot exist ;)

I like the idea of instruments...
Btw it could also be used with \"special\" effect (a little like magic effect)
For exemple, it could be used, if you know the right song with the right instrument, to increase your group\'s moral, and what about targetting someone (a NPC for exemple) and to sing a special song in order he falls asleep, then steal his stuff  :D

I thought about the midi idea, but not for very long, because the fact is, it could get very annoying with some of the songs being played because I doubt most would fit in with the planeshift atmoshpere, and also all the uploading to a bunch of different players at once might be too much on the server, or they just might want to cut down on using as much bandwidth as possible, and also, some people might want to make their own songs, but dont have acess or dont know how to use a midi maker

Of course they can, unless you are being sarcastic.  In which case they still can.  :D

well.... stringed instruments are very basic, so they would be popular, also percussain instruments were popular, mostly drums (some sort of round object with skin stretched over the top).  and again woodwind instruments would also be very common, especially flutes because of how basic they are, however brass instruments like trumpets and what not may not be as popular, although a simple horn without any buttons would be fine.  also, sorry for postin late on that, missed the original post about it.  :O :D :P

also another idea, when your stat gets high enough, maybe you could craft your own instruments, although people who just began crafting will make out of tune cheap looking ones, but as they progress in making, they get better and better, so after a while, a skilled nomadic musician would be able to settle down and open a store of hand crafted instruments if they wanted.

It\'d be cool to have instruments, I\'d guess you can buy one at a shop or have craftsmen to make them for you.
