Interesting idea regarding Ojaveda.
« on: September 29, 2006, 08:39:06 pm »
One interesting thing about Ojaveda is that it is incomplete, but its incompleteness is explained in-game as the doors leading to other areas being closed. This is different from other areas, which are currently inaccessible because they aren't made yet, but do not have an in-game explanation. When these other areas open, we will be expected to "forget" they were ever closed, because there is no reason they wouldn't be open. Ojaveda, however, presents an opportunity for a new area to be opened IC. Therefore, I think there should be some sort of RP prior to the opening of the rest of Ojaveda, that presents a reason for the opening. After all, the NPC's in Oja seem to imply that there is some sort of conspiracy in the Ojaveda government that resulted in the doors being closed... maybe the players (probably incited by some GM) could uncover the conspiracy and force the doors open?

Of course, we'll have to wait until soon(tm) for this...

Having events that influence the world around us is a very good idea. Whether they are with the help of GM's, or foretold by NPC's, it would be very nice to have such RP events that revolve around an important moment, it make the world feel more alive, more immersive.

Hopefully, there will be more stories like that of Ojaveda and of course, we would like to see the sequel of the events surrounding the opening of the gates.

To see the world in a grain of sand
And Heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

Assuming that there is an IC explanation for the doors being closed, I think this sounds like a great idea and a wonderful opportunity for an event which could become part of the 'official' history.  As Siteri mentioned,  I also seem to recall a book or NPC that does mention the doors being closed (someone correct me if I am mistaken).  Unless this is just a temporary settings workaround that will be removed from the game (and our characters' memories) once the other dsars are complete, then it seems that it would be a big deal to our characters when the doors open.

The biggest hurdle is probably in the timing of implementation.  The event would have to coincide with the release that includes the new areas.  But, time would have to be allowed for updating of all clients on all three platforms, but not so much time that nearly everyone has already explored the areas.  If there was a way of temporarily preventing access to these areas that could be 'removed' without another update or server reboot, that would be an ideal solution.  At the appropriate moment, the barrier could be removed and all present rush into the new areas at the same time.

Just a thought anyway and one that I think makes for interesting discussion.

There is. If you confront inhabitants of Akkaio with the topic of Ojaveda, you will at some point hear about a quarantine, imposed by the council. Meaning that all other Dsars and even the Steel Bazaar are closed.

One, minor flaw with the quest idea.

If you have done the quest and someone else hasn't, won't they see you walking 'through' a closed door? Its hard to have world affecting events in a mmorpg, without flaws.

No, it won't be a quest, it will be a GM-run RP. It'll happen once and then be over. Admittedly, some people might miss it, but then everyone will have the doors open at the same time.

Oh ok I get it now. So about 200 people standing by the Ojaveda doors waiting for them to open. That will be fun :D Mass player gathering.
