New Here

Hello I'm new here to PlaneShift.  I have one simple question, is there a lag problem with this game?

Ok well, another question is how big is it?  Is it like World or WarCraft or is it like RuneScape or somewhere inbetween.  For those of you who dont know the two games i'll elaborate.

In World of WarCraft it takes you a good 10 mins to get from one SMALL town to another.  A good 20-30 to get from major cities and areas to another.  There are also two continents so it's very similar to real world.

In Runescape it takes about 10 mins to get from one side of the map to another.

depending on your fitness you can run from Akkaio to Hydlaa in one sweep, if you;re lucky, but you have to be pretty healthy for that, usually takes atl east 10 minutes I guess, never timed myself

Do keep in mind that this is a game in development, meaning that it's a work of progress. You're going to be entering a world of bugs and a lack of guaranteed server stability - it is with the help of the community that we progress forward. The game is only at version 0.3, and we have two not-entirely-finished cities, a Bronze Doors fortress, and much land in-between. If you read the Setting of the game on the main website, you'll see that the end-goal for Yliakum (the current known world) is eight giant levels of land, and the very name of the game implies that even this won't be the limit. Travel will of course get faster with various methods as the game progresses.

Just don't walk in expecting a finished product here :]

in development,

Yeah I kinda noticed that when I found more than half of the races unfinished.  I also know that there are 8 levels planned for the final.  I just wanted to know how spaced they are.  There's also hint that we many go above ground or into another cave.   Basically what I find in the screenshots is what we have so far right?

I don't think the screenshots on the main website include the Bronze Doors fortress, so there's just a little bit more than what they show :}

Wow I was under the impression by my friend that the game was close to being done.  LOL ok thxs very much.  One last question: how much ppl does a server support?  I found many parts of PS deserted.  (I probably just joined at a bad time)

i think there are usually around 100 or so people at a time

there is only one server too

Not a lot of people stay to play a game this early in development, so the average number of players online floats between 100-200, though the server can hold many more. Around this time of day (or night, depending) things usually slow down a little.

:D Welcome to planeshift and it's community.

That is bound to happen. It all depends on what time you log in as some times are more busy than others. Hydlaa plaza is never dererted though. There are always all sorts running around. Try there is you are looking for some interaction. Have fun.

First of all: Lag comes in two different flavours:

  • Jerking graphics & Low Framerate - this is something directly related to your computer, most importantly the graphics card. You can find the minimum hardware requirements here.
  • Delayed chat messages & window updates - this is something related to the server, not much that can be done about that. It's located in Singapore, and the internet routes there are different for every internet provider. I'm unfortunate to get ping times between 350-500 with loads of packet loss, whereas friends who live relatively close by but have a different provider get a ping of 200 and almost no packet loss. In the end you have to try. :)
The internet is "the terrorists'" most important weapon, they say.
Wrong.
Fear is their most important weapon.
Ours is our freedom.

As far as I can tell (from the small amount of map we have) it will probably be similar to your description of WoW in travel time, with a MUCH larger world eventually.

As things are now, it takes around half an hour to an hour to travel from Ojaveda to the bronze doors area, which is one end of the map to the other. The space between areas tends to be extended from time to time - There are currently two long roads between Ojaveda and Hydlaa instead of the one there was before. When both cities are larger, it might start taking closer to the time to travel from Oja to BD to travel between them *shrug*
