Stand Up ~~ End Poverty by 2015
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:36:47 am »
           Six years ago, 189 world leaders sat down and agreed to end poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. On October 15&16, people across the world will stand up to remind them of this promise.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Launched by the United Nations Millennium Campaign, STAND UP is an exciting challenge to set an official Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people ever to Stand Up Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals.
On October 15&16, the world will come together and STAND UP and remind their governments that promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and help the billions living in extreme poverty, must be kept.
The purpose of the action is to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the eradication of poverty.
STAND UP is an initiative designed to coincide with Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) month of global mobilizations (www.whiteband.org ) around the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. We need everyone to take part to ensure governments listen and take action.
Find out how you can Join an existing event in your area or Organize your own STAND UP events.
Stand Up because:
- Every day 24,000 people die from hunger
- Every day more than 100 million children are denied the chance to go to school
- Every day 1.1 billion people have to drink polluted water
- Every day 8,200 people die due to HIV/AIDS
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Launched by the Millennium Campaign , STAND UP is a global advocacy effort toset an official Guinness World Record - the greatest number of people everto STAND UP Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals. On October 15-16 2006, the world will physically and symbolically "STAND UP" to communicate their desire to fight poverty and to hold their governments and leaders accountable for promises to end poverty by 2015. The purpose of this action is to raise awareness ofthe Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the achievement of the MDGs and for the strengthening of development policies in both Northern and Southern countries.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Millenium Goals
At the 2000 Millennium Summit, a major breakthrough was reached for the world when 189 Heads of State and Governments assembled together at the United Nations and pledged to make a better world for all by 2015. They agreed to do this by achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development
The Goals are a unique international agreement, being time-bound, measurable and having the public promise of every Head of State in the world. All eight Goals are achievable by 2015, but only if governments live up to their promises.
My Take
We are the first generation that can rationally fix the problem of extreme hunger, about half the world lives on $2 or less and we can change that.
I for one will Stand today and I won't let our Goverments forget about their promise, to stop the suffering of others, to hold politicians to their duties, and to bring smiles to hungry children all around the world.
I ask everyone in Hydlaa to Stand in the Hydlaa Square, if for only a second, to remind us of our responsibility to heal the suffering and stand fast together.
I stand with 10,959,789 people as of 3:30 Pacific Standard time.
Will you stand with me?
Realistically, I don't see this happening.  The US government, at least, seems to have been sitting on its bum for the past six years in regards to this.  (And members of the current party are not the types to care, neither are their constituents.)
The key to manipulative bargaining is to ask for something twice as big as what you want, then smile and nod when you are talked down to your original wish. You are still young, my apprentice, and have much to learn in the ways of the force. -UtM
Indeed. What the USA spends on its military in one day (~$1.2 billion, not including things such as nuclear weapons research, maintenance and production, Veterans Affairs or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (which are largely funded through extra-budgetary supplements)). would help a huge amount in many different areas, both within and outside the USA. But of course, they don't want to spend it. Not that this just applies to the USA,  most countries fall into the "talk big, no action" category.
More than that though, international corporations (and therefore the elite of the USA and its political leadership) exploit poverty to make a proffit.  They don't want poverty to go away.
I agree with what you all are saying, that's why this is such a pressing issue.
Out of the promised .5% of GDP from the U.S, we only send about .2%
But did you know we are one of the best when it comes to providing foreign aid.
Just think, if we provided the promised .5% of our Gross domestic product(GDP), How much we'd give.
Every person should push their country into this cause, each in his own area first and then branching outward.
If not by 2015, why not eradicate extreme poverty by 2020, let's stay on track though so that we keep our priorities straitened out.
Our generation is the Key, let's not slack on our duties.
I stand and I hope you all will too.
"US foreign aid" is largely another form of military spending.  Nations like Turkey are a good example of this - they receive aid because they support the military presence of the USA in the middle east.  That's my take on it, anyway.
Ya i know what you mean zanzibar.
What's even worse is that some of the money goes to undeserving nations.
And yes, as you pointed out, foriegn aid can be used as a weapon to force countries to listen to you.
Nevertheless, we need to get the foreign aid figured out properly and increased.
We stand for more than just money, but it's proper management.
Yeah this is one of those goals that will never happen sadly... But who can we really blame?  Should anyone blame the US?  I dont understand how, we all have a stake in this world.. every country and every leader in the world.  But it comes down to, some people just dont care.  Poverty can never be eliminated.. nor can any country just waltz into another and fix all their poverty problems.  Its about having the right leader that actually cares and inspires a nation.  Most leaders around the world dont care though.  They are rich and really the rest dont matter too much.  So its no one countries fault... its a world problem.
If not by 2015, then hopefully by 2020, But we cannot forget the promises made and we must make those dirty politicians keep their promises.
