There are different clients that you can use - some have a trial and some don't. Take a look at this list sometime, as it lists quite a few of them. Icechat is rather nice if I recall correctly.

I use leafchat.  I haven't had any problems with it.  I don't know how it ranks in comparison to other programs.

though if i wanted to connect atm id have to use mirc :|

x-chat2, I'm most comfortable with this layout compared to other clients, it's all preference though ^_^

Recommended Linux Irc Clients Include: kvirc at http://www.kvirc.net and bitchx at http://www.bitchx.org
Recommended Mac Irc Clients Include: kvirc at http://www.kvirc.net

Other tested programs:
mIrc failed the freeware test.
IRSSI failed the longterm connectivity test (lost connection about once an hour or more)
vIrc failed the ram usage test (this program took as much as 300meg of ram at some points)

If you use the Opera Browser, it has a built in irc chat (all platforms) and you can tab between channels and websites.  Sort of nice.  This is not a "pro's tool", but is ok for the occasional user.

i use firefox...and i jsut did icechat cause karyuu recommended it and i was impatient to figure out how to do it...
