UI Modifications - GM Please Read
« on: October 22, 2006, 05:03:46 am »
I know that, like all other MMORPGs, hacking to give yourself an unfair advantage is strictly prohibited, but what is your stand on UI modifications?  I ran a search, and am re-reading the Player Policy and haven't seen anything regarding it, so I figured I'd post this.  I play World of Warcraft, and they do not allow modifications that give you an unfair advantage, but they do allow UI modifications that let you customize or change the user interface to a certain point, so that you can navigate it to the best of your ability.  For example I have a mod that keeps track of damage done, healing done, etc. in parties so when we go on big raids I can take a look to see who is doing their job and who is just sitting back soaking up exp and drops.  Are UI modifications of "any" kind prohibited, or when PS gets out of testing can we expect to see a slew of nifty mods being pumped out?

I know that Acraig loves the idea of UI mods in PlaneShift As such things aren't likely to give you any unfair advantage but rather increase efficiency, I don't see why it would be a problem for our community to make them. The only thing I can think of that would give you difficulty at this time is PlaneShift's evolving state - so if you don't keep up with the growing changes, your mod may be completely out of date within a few releases. Or on the other hand if people like it enough, it may end up being part of the official client.

If you have the ability to create, I say go for it.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I would put it more like "You can create anything that does not give yourself an advantage other people cannot do." So making a way to copy and paste would be great, especially if you supply the code so other people can use it. On the other side, making code to automate your characters fighting would be a big no-no.

if you have any interest in your code being part of the offical game, talk to a dev and they will be more then happy to listen to you.
