Crafting Q&A Session summary from April 30, '06
« on: October 28, 2006, 04:06:39 am »
Questions asked by various people. Answers by TomT unless otherwise noted.

-----

Q: what weapons/shields can we craft untill now, according to skills etc.?
A: a wide variety of shields can be made from bucklers to large spiked shields in both steel, iron, bronze and gold. many of the common edged weapons also short swords, daggers, axes. also some of the special sheilds you have seen in game can be made.

Q: I wonder why you started the crafting with a rather complex and probably complicated topic - metallurgy.
A: We wanted to bridge the gap between the miner and the smith - we would rather players specialize in one group of skills then do it all themselves. that is why we did not give the smith the ability to refine the ore. we hope to have metallurgy grow over time. You should be able to make some alloys.

Q: Are the things you create limited only be whether you have the "crafting design" knowledge or also by level or proficiency?
A: what you can create is by crafting design to start - and you also have to have min skills for some things

Q: Also, what form of crafting do you think we'll see next?
A: We will have to see ;)

Q: Are there plans (even distant) for crafting of glyphs, one-off spell potions, etc.?
A: I do not think there is any plans to craft glyphs, but that is a good idea. We will have to see about the rest.

Q: any news on tailoring?
A: good question, that also depends on the artwork for cloths and such. crafting will only make items that the game supports, so when that becomes an in game item then tailoring should soon follow.

Q: My farther was a brewer, when can I cary on his craft?
A: That's my favorite craft.  I hope soon - but the smith data alone was 1,400 rows of data.

Q: will we be able to set crystal or any type of gem in to an item we make?
A: good question, I would like to do that at some time - but that seems more the work of a goldsmith or jeweler then a blacksmith

Q: How is the existence of bronze explained? Do we have the raw materials available for that? I just haven't personally seen copper or tin in-game.
A: It was discovered in ancient times by accident when poeple noticed rocks metling in the fire and the metal flowing and joining. If you do not have access to the ores you will soon have it. they exist - we just need to setup some mining spots for them.

Q: how are we supposed to get the new ores, mining or another skill?
A: ore's and other minerals will be mined - other things may be found just sitting around in the wilderness

Q: what is the order of tools you go to when u want to make an item, (frunaces, stock casting......)?
A: It will be a very natural order - if you have ever done any metal work you would know. there is also some books around in game soon that will give you some more help.

Q: is coal used in crafting?
A: yes

Q: The books that are required to have "in mind", can these be found in game yet, besides the one from Harnquist? IE Knife making/repair, or shield making (this is assuming a book is needed for each skill)?
A: no we were hoping to have those quests defined by this week end - but we are very close - we have some artwork issues and then the quests and we are ready. yes the books are needed.

Q: so we are going to be limited to what we can make by the books that are avalable in game?
A: yes, we had to have some context for creating things - it seems limiting but the shields and weapon books we have allow you to make dozens of items.

Q: will we need a book for making every type of item?
A: yes - otherwise there is no way to know your intent - and since there are so many varieties of things you can do it is very hard for us to do this with the design book idea

Q: If we require a book for each kind of item / good class, will all be only available via quest, or also be purchaseable? I saw a matching class in one of the merchants, so they seem to buy them...
A: usually it will be some sort of quest that will get you craft book - not sure why you would want to sell you craft books, I'll find out.

Q: How far along the to-do list are the "repair" skills now that core crafting stuff is done? (i.e. is crafting something to build repairing from, or are they entirely separate?)
A: good question - repairing is somewhat in the works and will not be part of crafting at least not at first.

Q: when weapon repair is done will it only repair to 75%, and why?
A: I'm not sure - i think repair is limited to the quality of the item to start.

Q: will a stained shortsword only repair to the same lvl as a ruined one? this seem odd.
A: Sorry I can't answer that - we are still working on short and long term plans for repair

Q: when you can repair weapons then, it means weapons become a life, and they will be kaput after a while ? and how long can you use a weapon then, before its unusable?
A:  it will depend on a variety of things. ou will have to keep watch on your item.

Q: when will this work, that weapons getting damaged?
A: next server release.

Q: when there are more books is there a way, to put them all in one slot or a bag? you will got probs, with all the glyps and books
A: only one book in slot at a time. good point we will have to discuss how to solve that.

Q: not directly a question than a weird observation: its a bit weird to have melted iron in the backpack.
A: ah, yes I hated that also - we debated that and could not find a way around it for the time being.

Q: weapons with special powers will it be posable to recharge them?
A: I would hope so but that is down the line I think

Q: will the mages be able to bless the weapons so it will get modded?
A: We are still in the process of deciding the best way to do that - so right now no.

Q: will we be able to add glows (like an aura) to weapons like in WoW?
A: I do not know if there are any plans for that sort of effect

Q: Has the problem with level 6+ metallurgy and piles of dust been fixed yet, I got frustrated and haven't checked today yet?
A: The problem with the 6+ metallurgy is two fold: one the correct message is not coming back from the engine - that has been fixed and will available soon. the other part is that we are playing with the max skill values for some of the processes so we can limit leveling up from doing simple crafting.

Q: so just making stocks will not gain XP after a certain level?
A: yes - you will see a message about getting bored and failing

Q: what will be the max slash weapons being able to craft?
A: there is no limit to the types of items to be crafted. we hope to make them more valuable in certain ways then the looted weapons, but at first they will be simple.

Q: Will slash rating of a given weapon be proportionate to the crafter's skill level in making it?
A: Good question, at first we only have none modified weapons - we plan to have specifically modified weapons require a special ingredient or process to produce.

Q: How do you intend to make sure that crafting will actually be worth doing? Will there be items which can only be crafted so crafters will be necessary? And the items we can craft which npc's also sell (like the normal sword Harnquist sells) will we be able to craft them cheaper than the NPC's sell" them?
A: yes so items only crafters can create, but many items you can sell to NPCs as a way to make money for more materials - we will try to have the pricing such that is is worth doing.

Q: will it be able to get progression points through crafting as some crafters won't have time for battles?
A: yes, absolutely

Q: Will the XP/PP/etc. reward be significant enough so that everyone doesn't feel like they have to be adept at crafting to remain competitive, preserve status, etc. (so that crafters will be rewarded enough to feel motivated to craft for those that aren't particularly interested in crafting)?
A: tough question. we try to balance the reward to make it significant with out making it too easy to advance. I think some players will be more interested in adventuring. certainly that might be an easier way to make money and status. but crafting should be more RP and community oriented players I think.

Q: is there a way to make different armor like medium and heavy with more/less hides or make them with platin or gold or silver?
-Karyuu laughs in the background
Josephoenix comments "well, first you pay karyuu so she can make all the textures... :P"

A: the gold armor is very heavy and for show only I think - the steel versions of large shields will be craftable

Q: Why do both the furnace and the stock casting have combining buttons?
A: all containers have combine button.
Q: Are all implemented?
A: they are all implemented, if there are items that can be combined in that container/equipment by the player with enought skills, correct craft book, correct quantities, ...

Q: How far is the concept of "combining" developed already?
A:  it's completly developed

Q: building on that... how hard is it to create a new list of "combinations"?
A: we are in the process of creating more crafting data and solving some of the bugs we found in game.  one thing important here is this is all data driven - no special metallurgy or smith code as been written. we should be able to add more crafts by just adding data.

acraig comments "We need to add some more GUI elements to make it easier to
figure out crafting data"

A: We are trying to figure out a way to make some things more intuitive - post some ideas on the forum is you have them. I think trial and error will give most everyone the answers they want but we do not want eveyone else to loose interest."

Q: it was tarel's shield i think that had spike's but do they harm the thing attacking you when you block?
A: I think spiked shields are more dangerous to the wielder then the opponent, but no extra damage at the moment

Q: would it ever be possible to make other spiked item like armor?
A: spiked shields are part of the smith craft. is that what you mean?

Q: do they harm the thing attacking you when you block? <- are shields actually working now? blocking?
-tanner_ comments "before i say mine iv used a shield before to block"
A: OK

Q: Will crafters be able to make certain items only at Trasok's forge, or only at Harnquists forge, so that they will have to travel, or that you will have special Hydlaa and Ojaveda crafters?
A: Crafting is equipment dependant. that means one forge is as good as another.

Q: Along the lines of equipment dependable...are there plans to add the extra equipment to Trasok's? Harnquist currently has the quench tank, sharpening stone, etc, while Trasok does not.
A:  yes the other equipment will be added soon I hope.

Q: is it going to be possible to use magic in crafting to add something like fire damage to a weapons attack?
A: I would love to see that, but currently until we work magic into the items they will remain mundane. crafting will only be able to produce items that have capabilities as those we have now in game.

Q: Is there an estimated completion date for the Steel Bazaar?
A: I have no idea, I'll try to find out.

Q: when the Steel Bazaar is complete, I got the impression from NPC conversation that the crafting facilities there will be on a leased/fee per use basis. Is this still the plan?
A: there is no plans to lease crafting equipment - at least no plans for the public equipment. at some point I think guilds may own private equipmentwhich may not be so crowded and may require some sort of fee ;) we have to solve a varaiety of problems before that I think - so at least in the short range - no fees.

Q: will we be able to chop down trees in the forests to, to make axegrips?
-Karyuu comments "I'd rather not have the power of deforestation in player hands ;D"
A: hehe

Q: It might seem obvious, but will the quality of the original ore/molten/stock material be a factor in the quality of the finished product?
A: it is now - most raw materials start out at 100%. each skill check reduces the quality from that - very complex items will there for require very skilled players to keep at high quality.

Q: As crafting will be expanded, the number of players trying to sell stuff will increase, so will there be some kind of special Auction House?
A: Good suggestion. I do not think a specific aution area has been chosen. I think in Akkaio the tent area can quickly become one. we would need a place near the plaza also for a market I think, but that is up to the settings group.

Q: would melting and making a stock or ingot then re-melting over and over change the quality of the item?
A: not sure I would have to check. only certain critical steps effect quality.
-Satayne comments "I noticed it does, in a cycle though"

Q: about the higher output of new crafted weapons and increase of usage of natural resources, in the future will there be flux prices depending on the supply and demand? same goes with weapons?
A: there is some randomness involved. That's a better question for Talad - but obviously game economics is important to us all and in it's infancy - but to answer the question currently all prices are fixed and not supply/demand based.

Q: not sure, if its asked, but will making steel in this way, that you reworking iron ingots to make steel from it ?
A: you can make steel now Rob...

Q: Can a metal item that has been crafted be remelted and than made in to another item?
A:  good question, many of the items can be remelted to stock - but not all of them - for the most part we tried to have simple items with the same stock type by meltable back to stock.

Q: with all this crafting will NPC loot decrease as the player made items incress?
A: not necessarily, that is a careful balance the rules team is working on - for the most part we are trying to make the crafted stuff better.

Q: When cloaks can be made, will hoods be able to be put up and down?
A: I do not even know where to start with that one - Venge|away can you help?
-Venge|away comments "ah, I don't know. probably not"

Q: Are you already planning new shops, maybe even opening the rarely known second magic shop near the tavern?
A: it's just a matter of putting the equipment in place

Q: will we be able to craft in the arena at Veja's?
A: never thought of that. if it's appropriate yes.

Q: is it still possible to put things in the containers that don't belong there? like trias, animal parts, ... or do they vanish/become public after a short time?
A: yes some containers will turn items into dust and then disapear - other container they will go public after a couple of min - right now we have a problem with trias so please be patient

Q: I remember seeing a reference to gold in the crafting of oricalch in an in-game reference. Would it be possible to add more subtle hints for other things throughout the world like that one?
A: good idea, right now we have quests messages, some ingame books, the design item description, I'ms ure we can work some NPC talk into it as well.

Q: will there be guildlairs for ores?
A: we need guild lairs first

Q: When will we be able to "craft" baked meat in the tavern's kitchen?
-josePhoenix comments "when cooking is ingame, same with other 'crafts' "
A: as far as mushrooms are concerned - the cooking skill has a lot of future in the way we designed this - it just does not have very much usefull items that it can create.

Q: will the cooking system be similar to crafting excpet it uses the kitchen?
A: cooking will be easy - maybe we can create a recipe post on forum to make it easier for us?
-Venge|away comments "The intent from the beginning was that crafting would support baking and smithing equally well."

Q: does consuming food increase your stats?
A: -josePhoenix comments "it heals some, but no stat boost, afaik"

Q: will we be able to make gold, silver weapons?
A: gold and silver are soft metals and make only ornamental weapons - so for no they are not possible to make - some gold shields are possible

Q: Is it currently possible to melt/cast gold/platinum? I seem unable at metallurgy 10. Am I missing books currently available?
A: Gold should work, I'll have to check on platnum. the how to make stock book should be enough.
-Teraukey comments later "I just have been in the game, you told monk that melting gold is possible... but to me it's not. I'm level 10 metallurgy as well."
A: We will have to take a look - thanks for the info. alot of this is data base maintenance so there will be some weird things as we introduce new crafts. items that will not be possible to make and the such.

Q: is it difficult to create the new data for the database?
A: it takes time for complicated crafts like smiths but we are getting better at it

Q: As for creating gold items, they would be weak and just for showing off?
A: not so much as weak - as very heavy and expensive

Q: on the main page it sais that gold silver weapons to + dmg to some races. how can this be if the gold dagger breaks when you hit a plate armor with it?
A: ah, well - I think they mean gold or silver tipped weapons. Metallugry will expand over time to create some very usefull item
I think.

Q: will all the crafted items wear always the name of the crafter?
A: yes both crafters name and any guild they are in will always appear in item description.

Q: is it possible to craft the best items available (like weapons, armors, ...)?
A: crafting items will be better then looted items - they should last longer before needing repair

Q: Will crafters be able to give the sword they created names like "Excalibur?"
A: not at present

Q: Will there be any limiting factors placed on how many/how much a person can craft in a given time period?
A: each craft takes a certain amount of game time to complete. we can increase those times if we think it's being abused. your mental stanima will stop you from crafting too much in one time. right now it's very light impact but we should be able to turn that up a little.

Q: Will some races have better abilities/(max skill) in diffrent craftings? (like dwarfs might have an talnet for mining)?
A: -josePhoenix comments "Yes, since crafting relies heavily on skills and skills are influenced by character creation."

Q: both crafters name and any guild they are in will always appear in item description <- what about secret guilds?
A: hmm, as long as your player's account has that guild it will appear.
-josePhoenix comments "TomT, that might need to change..."
A: yes seems so.

Q: will it be able to create sculptures or small statues from molten metals?
A: if someone does the artwork and if they have some value in game - then yes.

-edited for correctness and flow

After rereading the logs, it looks like this question:

"Wen bows and other weapon s get implented what could be a possibility of materials to plan using to make such weapons?"

was not answered. The original answer I gave to it was a reply to a comment made. Instead it should read:

acraig comments "We need to add some more GUI elements to make it easier to
figure out crafting data"

A: We are trying to figure out a way to make some things more intuitive - post some ideas on the forum is you have them. I think trial and error will give most everyone the answers they want but we do not want eveyone else to loose interest."

Wow! You had this saved away? I'm so glad to see it again - the forum section where it was kept last was removed, taking a lot of valuable information with it. This thread is worth keeping around :]

(Eventually I'd like to drag it over to the "News and Announcements" section with the other Q&A's, once people approve.)
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.
