PP's XP's and Practice
« on: November 04, 2006, 02:54:09 am »
One thing I have seen repeated on the forums is that the only way to get progression points is by fighting monsters, that you get no experience from mining or crafting. You do get experience from mining. I think it works out to about 1% or so per unsuccesful attempt and 12.5% per success ( I just looked) If you are watching the status window you will see the odd progression point being awarded even on a failure.  You always get experience fightin monsters. I am not sure about the other crafting skills but I see no reason they would be different.

Well metallurgy is different in one way at least which I don't really understand. That is in the way that tasks which count towards practice early, i.e. melting ore, don't count later. I think they should count, perhaps at a lesser value but it is still using metallurgy. To me this would be like the difference between fighting rats and figthing gobbles and so on. The more difficult the challenge receives the better payoff.

Can anyone enlighten me or does anyone have thoughts on this?

EDIT
Corrected some numbers and removed some erroneous speculation due to actually looking to see how mining works.

About mining, i am not sure, maybe you could interprete it as really digging the interesting mineral and not just the "normal" stone, but i don't really know.

About Metallurgy: I think it is right that after some point you will not learn anything new from very simple works, maybe it could be a little more gradual, so after some time you get less experience and later none, but that is not too important i think.
But your comparison to fighting rats is good. Fighting easy enemies should get less rewarding when you get stronger. By now this was addressed like in Hack 'n Slash games: The higher your level is, the more EXP you will need for the next level, so fighting easy enemies is no longer rewarding. But with the possibility to get EXP from different sources than only fighting, it could be good to have a formula to decide how many EXP you get, but i don't know how it should look like because your fighting strength depends on several stats and skills and your weapons.
Or even better: we get a system without EXP where you get specific experience in what you are doing, and nothing else, as discussed several times (one example: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=24199.0 but there should be more threads like this out there).

No, PP's are what make PS better than all of the other games that use the system you suggested.

Except that PP's make no sense at all.  Why should killing rats help make you a better blacksmith?

Unfortunately you cannot wield a hammer in combat yet. I tried. It is not a weapon.

I would like to see progression points as we know them now abolished and replaced with points that basically act as free training vouchers.. Rewards from quests or big official events that can be spent instead of trias on training..  The current system just doesn't make sense. How does hitting a monster with a sword for hours make you more able to purchase training than not? Trainers can't suck all those hours of hitting out of you as payment, all they really get are the trias.. And you're not gaining any practice for most of that time either, so it's not as if it's helping your training progress. At least, not realistically.
