Weapon in shield hand?

Is it of any use if i carry a weapon in my left hand? My char only smashes or stabs with the right hand. Or does the weapon in the left hand also do damage and it is just not animated?

Two weapons means double the damage, even if you only see yourself hitting with one hand :}

Does that mean two shields means double the defence?
