Stats & Skills Limit
« on: November 09, 2006, 01:46:55 pm »
I saw already few threads about that, but I will show you the simplier (and better IMO).

You all know, that lots of players play only to stat. They still run for next PP and skill points. How to cut it? Isn't it the RolePlaying game? There shall be a stat limit.

The stat limit. If there is a stat limit, the players can't make the chars that will still train the same stat or skill and training instead of just roleplaying. Because the life of character should be rather made by quests, not by training.

The skill limit of fighting and magic skills should depend on the monsters' power. The most powerful monster should be able to kill the player with max stats (skills) with few hits, but not in one. And the player shall need also few hits to kill him.

The skill limit for thieves' skills (like hiding) should look like - if you have max hiding skill, you can be almost invisible (only in the most opened and bright place he can be visible). It's because the thieves haven't got the easy life, so they need to have at least skills.

The skill limit of gathering, crafting and other peaceful skills should be enough to create the most powerful items with 100% chance of success or gather the big amounts of high-quality materials. No sense of raising it more.

The STAT limit should be low, so the stats don't decide about your character's life more than it is absolutely needed for realistic game.

Please read it before delete ;).

But if there is a low limit there will be more 'jacks of all trades' as the levelers will not stop and will just move on to a different skill, thus leading to less player interaction.

When the newbies see the training of next, unuseful for them skill is so booring, they will start interacting. But why to interact with the another players if you can increase your one, favourite skill into infinity?

They don't care for interaction in the first place. They only care about numbers. Having it low would also be boring. You must spend years to perfect a skill, not spend a week and be a master. If everyone ended up equaly as good, for exampe, a crafter why would I buy from one and not the other?

are you mad? I have right train as much as I want. I want to have strong char, my RP depends on my strength .. SO I have right to train as much as I can :@#\ I hate forcing players to stop training to roleplay, I know it's rp game but rping character stronger than me when ingame stats are saying something else is IMHO realy dumb. If you want to play strong "evil" or strong "good" char >> BE STRONG

Mind the language. My god! You can be strong but RP is more important.

Sometimes I'm surprised which some new player that I meet two weeks ago, now are much more powerfull than me (I have played PS about a month)
They just level up their chars... I just roleplay, I don't care much leveling, just the needed.
From time on time I spend a journey camping on a rogue or a mercenary to get some PP and then I train what I need.
I must to say I have 'dumb' character because he has low levels on almost all stats and skills, but I don't care. When I get the chance to RP I'm happy.

Something that mad me are those player who came closer and press the challenge button, I reject all the time...
Why should I fight with one I don't know? Introduce yourself first, and give me a reason to fight, roleplay with me, hurt my feelings, and maybe I will fight.

socia, you don't understand what I am talking about. I don't say about making the players sick of their low skills that can't be increased. I say about making the players skick of their high skills that can't be increased, BECAUSE THEY ARE HIGH ENOUGH TO DO ANYTHING THEY WANT WITH THEM! Killing the strongest monster with one hit is... wrong! So there must be skill & stat limit! But it will be high ofcourse! We can also talk about the increasing training speed. If the newbie reach the highest skill fast, maybe he will go roleplaying for fun!

But should a newbie be the best crafter in all of yiliakum when others have done it all their life? Makes no sence.

Omg, this topic has been discussed to death.

Unmortal, search before you start yet another one. Play the game for few month and rethink what you write about. Maybe i'm wrong but you seam to know really a little.

Short on topic note: I'm roleplayer and i feel my RP will suffer if my character will be restricted to some weird limits. So please don't talk how you will stop PL, while your blade is double edged.

As Xordan wrote, there are limits already.

There are limits, as said above. I'd also just like to point out that if ANY player walks up to the hardest creature in the game, stands still and attacks it they will very quickly find themselves stood in the Death Realm. I've even been told by a GM that they took several hits to kill the largest beast and there skill and stats are substantially above the players limit. In addition GMs cant be killed I dont think....... unless thats just by players ;)

There are some players who can stand toe to toe with an ulbernaut but I believe it requires regular potion use. I think I might be able to do this (haven't tried lately) but I don't feel like wasting 50 potions to kill one critter. That said ulbers are slow and stupid so a wily and swift character can kill one fairly easily provided they don't fall off the face of the earth. It does require that you have enough hits and armor to take a double blow from the ulber if you take a misstep or two so it is not a challenge a pure RP player will ever get to surmount. You can say all you want that you are trashing ulbers left and right but unless you can really do it you are dreaming in technicolor. This is why I proposed a system that divorced training from ingame actions so that even people who don't like doing all the things that give their characters "legitimacy" can actually have the skills/stats to back their claims.
Such a system assumes that when you are offline you are doing the things you don't actually want to do in game.
It also kind of punishes those who enjoy doing those things unless there is some other kind of reward .

I will add that the fact thet you kill NPCs and PCs often with one hit has nothing to do with high skills. It is because the system isn't finished and it is kind of even stupid to complain on something what is done well, but it seem to work wrong, because something very different is lacking.
