Dual-Clienting for Mac and other things...
« on: November 12, 2006, 11:22:24 pm »
I vaguely remember being able to do it when I started playing in april... Now I can't do it. Haven't changed computers or OS though, just updated and reinstalled a couple of times. Can mac clients dual-client? (log-in with different accounts at the same time, that is). Not that I need to but I was wondering if this was a Mac limitation. Any ideas?

On another note: these are just a few problems I've had for a while now. Nothing too serious but since I'm posting I might as well address them.

1) I reinstalled the game a few days ago. Ran the updater but I still can't see the stuff implemented with the last update like the new animations, kran armor (I only see the helmets) and even lost some skins! (I can't see chain mail on Klyros or elves).

2) Besides that, my relight panel seems broken too. The BD area is half black and when I use the setup ap. to relight it I only get "relighting standby" and nothing else.

3) On top of that, my client suddenly quits. Sometimes compulsively and with no explanation.

4) And finally, I can't save logs even though my options are set to do it.

In short: my client's a mess... BUT I can still play so I don't really care :sweatdrop:. However, any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

You should be able to dual-client. Try starting with PSClientCMD (available from the Guide thread).

Which updater are you using? Try the other one. And update a couple of times for good measure.

Don't know how well that works. Again, be patient. It will take HOURS. If it still doesn't work, there're some threads on relighting from the command line floating around. You may want to try it that way.

That's nothing new. ;)

Dfryer'll probably have to take a look at this one. The only think I can think of is permissions. Do you have read-write-access to the logs folder?

Try Updater.jar if you've been using updater.app. Or if you've been using Updater.jar, try updater.app. Updater.jar is, of course, in the Guide.

2) Illori comes to the rescue for us again - follow the instructions in this post I made in another thread:

http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26201.msg294508#msg294508

4) Logs that you set under the Options Icon in your PS Client can be in either of two places that I've found them in at various times.
i) Macintosh HD/logs
ii) <your User Home folder>/Library/Applications Support/Planeshift3D/logs

If you can't find them, search your HD using Spotlight. The files will be named something like: Zhai_chat.txt and Zhai_system.txt

- I hope that helps you :)
- running PlaneShift Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) Client, on an Apple iMac G5 2GHz PowerPC processor, 2GB DDR SDRAM, an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card with 128MB VRAM, a 20-inch active-matrix LCD widescreen display, and a 250GB Serial ATA hard drive... so what's your excuse, huh?

I can dual if I wish to... although still really takes system resources and patience. My logs are saving fine, so I suspect a permissions misconfiguration on your workstation (they exist on the root of my HD rather than in PS folder or somewhere in system). The random crash does happen at least once a day for me. The relight panel does not seem to work and I see the same things in the BD. I did have to use the Java updater like three times in a row after the last update, but I have been seeing all the new content fine since then. All around, very pleased with the Mac client, I must say.

Ok. Good news:

1) I ran the updater.app again (I ran the .jarr and the client wouldn't open so i reinstalled), this time from the terminal and I can finally see Kran armor, helmets (dwarves do look a bit like R2D2 :whistling:), the Fenki strafe and the female Ynwnn animation... (not sure if I wanna keep that though, is the patch to disable it available for mac as well?).

2) Thanks Wandering Djinn I found my wandering logs! Yay! They were in the HD/logs folder instead of the PS folder.

Now,

I still can't dual client... I have PS in my dock though... maybe that's it *goes to check* Nope... clueless. I wonder why?

Also, I haven't been to the BD yet, but I'll try the relight thing soon. Hope it works.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice. :flowers:

Am I missing something or did you really just get advice on how to dual client? I thought that was considered a big no-no by the Devs and GMs  ???

As far as I know, dual-clienting isn't frowned upon. Yes, it can be exploited and some uses will be seen as cheating but it can also help a lot in RP if used correctly. Here's the thread where it was discussed.

ahhh, I did bring something up about this with Tarel in game and as far as I recall he was suggesting that it was being considered to ban players who used multiple accounts/Clients, im not totally sure about this so dont quote me, im at work so cant exactly review my chat log.  ;) I do definatly recall some of my guild members being worried though because a couple use shared internet connections and share an IP.

As far as that thead you linked to, I was reading that but got bored of it somewhere along the line so stopped.

There was discussion about creating a rule against dual-clienting, but in the end, we decided that for the moment at least, it would be too much of a hassle. Dual-clienting is allowed for roleplay and for muling until permanent storage solutions are made available. Dual-clienting is not allowed for scamming other players, collecting items from monster-hunting, or any other reason. When using an alt for a mule, you can log on and give stuff to the alt or take stuff from the alt, but you should not be taking the alt with you when you go mob-killing.
