Role Playing
« on: February 22, 2003, 09:06:35 pm »
What, if any (I realize this is early in the developmental stage) thought have you given towards the actual role playing aspect of the game?

For example what, if any, in-game ideas / deisgn mechanics, do you want in-game that\'ll make it more attractive to actually \'role-play\' instead of just go out and level, either alone or in groups.

Majority of MMORPG\'s end up being simply hack-n-slash games with a LOT of people.

Again, just so the question is clear:
What types of idea\'s / in-game mechanics do you have / want in place to make this a true role playing game (as much as possible) rather than another hack -n- slash adventure rpg?

Well, first of all there are no levels, so gaining them would not do you any good :)

Here\'s the way I think it should be:

You gain experience by doing something in that field, like cooking, unlike when you level in another game and you just spread the exp out to whatever you get experience for cooking or fighting or whatever (like in Morrowind I guess)

But i\'m not actually sure what the devs have thought out for it

I hope for the Morrowind system since it\'s the best I\'ve ever seen in an RPG.
However I didn\'t like Morrowind because it had no \"feeling\" if you know what I mean (Nearly all NPCs said the same thing and so on...

To that respect fanomatic, I\'ll play the tune. I don\'t want to hear 1000 NPC\'s say the same 6 lines over and over again. Do NOT get me wrong, if those 1000 NPC\'s are scattered quite well throughout the world, where it isn\'t a \'constant\' annoyance (reference to morrowind) then yeah, it would be ok to have those same 1000 NPC\'s all say similiar (hopefully not the exact SAME thing)

However, I also understand and realize the kind of creativity it would take to well create that many varied responses / situations / text inputs.

To the end result though, neither of you, despite your concidered comments, have answered the question.

What will be implemented to make this a Role playing game, and not a hack and slash. I understand, as well it seems, that true role playing in the sense of table top, where you and your buddies are laughing out loud at the DM\'s horrid pronunciation of the word \'about\' is something you can never get on a computer. But you can get a lot of the same, albeit generic, feel of a RPG.

Admittedly I have no idea\'s at present what could be thought of to add to PS that\'ll make that feel more vivid. Hopefully, someone can think of something and post it here. Who knows? Maybe that one idea makes Planeshift so incredible once implemented, that it top\'s charts for years to come.

PS should have roleplaying between then players and npcs, but i don\'t think that roleplaying between people should be forced, or at least have a server dedicated to people that want to roleplay less.

I\'m really thinking that i will sign up as DumbWoob_ooc

As far as role playing?there will be checks and balances.  Not in any alpha release but as we go to beta then some of the players choices will affect their characters. For example if we have a Paladin type (NPC led) organization?the people in it won?t be able to cozy up with the Necromancer types and kill everything in sight?you will likely be kicked out of the organization.

On the character improvement side?you will gain skill points dependant on what you do, not where you put points.

There will be a system that gives the players some control on certain areas of advancement?but usually you advance based on what skills you use.

Now as far as Role Playing?this is a Role Playing centric game, as such you will probably be rewarded for playing your character as a character?I am not talking about typing ?hail fair maiden, would you like to seek adventure with me, I am going to kill the Vermin orcs over past the river? No, it will be more like, if you want to get all the cool special abilities the Crusaders of Talad have, then your character has to live up to that code of honor.  And if you do to the NPCs and not to the PCs?it will not be beyond the imagination for a GM to adjust your values to reflect your PC actions.

As far as more or less role play centric servers?I doubt it. But you never know.

But you mean the actual intention, not the content right, like if i say \"Screw you biznatch!\" i will get demoted cause paladins should show respect, but if i said \"How\'s it going up there in indiana?\" I wouldn\'t, can we get demoted for using non-rpg context?

Well woob, since your a fellow Texan, I guess I will agree with you even though I don\'t, Planeshift really shouldn\'t be used as a big chatroom, like it is now. If you have stuff like that to talk about it should be in /tell or /pm whatever it is in PS, or not in PS at all.

So suppose we could implement a special kind of \"RPing moderators\" group that will report anybody who can\'t roleplay sensibly.  These could be hand picked by the PS staff or something if they have time to *waves* so that if a player is reported using jargon or being a \"Kewl-d00d\" they may have an experiance or financial penalty.  Also, so that these people aren\'t too strict with their power, they will allow people using OOC before their typing jargon.  An interesting idea from Link is in the Wish List section, so i reccomend you check it out.  And reply, he\'ll get more publicity ;)

Maybe NPCs can be updated like the game somehow, every new day they have new information to give out or some hint on quests and such?

Hmm, I dont know how the whole chat system is on here(cause i haven\'t played it....yet  ), but when I was a beta tester for Rubies of Eventide(before they switched engines) they had implemented a few different chat systems:

just typing in the chat box sent a message to whoever was near

/whisper name: text  - sent the msg to only that person

/ooc: text -sent a message to everyone on the server

/ooc off - that command turned off ooc (if you didnt want to hear [read] what was being said[typed]

/ooc on - turned on ooc

then they had the \'/me: text\' to say something like \'Farkeld screams in terror\' to those who were close enough

and they had short cuts like

/smile  \'Farkeld smiles\'
/yell     \'Farkeld yells\"
(that sort of thing)

I thought it was pretty cool, but if you have like 16 people all on /ooc at the same time it got pretty hectic, especially if you were in a party and trying to talk to them and on /ooc

That was just my input on the matter  ^_^

While the chating idea is on hand....when you type are only the people with a certin range goign te be able to hear you??  So if you are in a party way out in the stone layberinth and you say sometihng, will only your party hear you

sorry if i this has been established......I am an idiot..

I would assume so.

Event:

You and 3 other people are standing together(within lets say 20 meters) and there is a guy standing lets say 100 meters away, your friends would more then likely hear you if your talking normally, but the guy 100 meters away wouldnt be able to hear you..

It makes sense to me...

Like what is said at the beginning of the post about being a \"hack n\' slash\" game instead of good roleplaying, who reckons they can RP well enough to be one of those moniters who has the power to report poor roleplay?

/em looks smug
