All servers say "failed"
« on: November 22, 2006, 10:33:41 pm »
I have finally decided myself to actually INSTAL the game after a few months of exile because of diploma thesis.

Everything went ok. Version 3.17 got downloaded quite quickly, the updater worked just fine.

But I cannot connect. My firewall is set up to allow the game to acess the net with no blocking at all. I have noticed some other boards with the same problem, but there was a rather non-explicit answer from Tom ordering to read the sticky boards, but I did not find anything there.

There are 80 people online, so I guess the server is up...

Can someone help this lady in distress? Thank you!

EDIT: Ok, I have noticed that suddenly everyone is gone, so I guess the server is really not working.... Bummer! I wanted to see the new planeshift (I haven't played since version 15, I believe!)

Hello !

After looking around a bit the following solution worked for me:

In the file ./data/servers.xml I had to change the port number from 7333 to 7777 !
<server name="Fragnetics" ip="laanx.fragnetics.com" port="7777" />

Now it works on my linux system.

cu in game

Thank you for the tip! :)

I will try! But it seems that all ports are closed! I am gonna try as soon as I see someone else online again!

Running the updater after installing .17 kinda breaks the install.  From what I read anyways.  From what I read, all you need to do is install .17, then play.  Just ignore that message saying run the updater at the begging of the game, when it connects to the server for now.  :)  have fun

Totaly correct sir.
after reading your answer i uninstalled the client then installed it again and took care not to run the updater at the end of the install.
Guess what ?
The server is ok and i can join.

So this is not an issue of firewall like Tom thought.
This is an issue with the updater that do wrong things and seems to break some things.

So Solution is:
uninstall
install again WITHOUT running the updater.

Running the updater doesn't "break" the installation, I actually advice everyone to run the updater.
After successfully running the update just edit the file <planeshift>/data/servers.xml and change

<serverlist>
   <server name="Fragnetics" ip="laanx.fragnetics.com" port="7333" />
   <server name="localhost" ip="localhost" port="13331" />
</serverlist>

to the following entry:

<serverlist>
   <server name="Fragnetics" ip="laanx.fragnetics.com" port="7777" />
</serverlist>

since the current port on laanx is 7777 and only developer need a server on localhost.

Now you can enjoy playing.

Another tip:
If you forgot you password, just copy the old password hash from your old <planeshift>/planeshift.cfg to your new installation.
The lines you need to copy/replace are:

planeshift.cfg:
----------------------

Planeshift.Connection.Fragnetics.User = my.email@address.com
Planeshift.Connection.Fragnetics.Password = 6487164816486486126386979797...

That's it! Have fun!

Btw: when you wanna check whether the server is up check server status at http://laanx.fragnetics.com/main.php ("total online" > 0)
you can log in even when nmap returns that port 7777 is closed:

------------------------
$ nmap laanx.fragnetics.com
Interesting ports on kraken.fragnetics.com (210.193.49.103):
Not shown: 1672 closed ports
PORT     STATE    SERVICE
21/tcp   open     ftp
22/tcp   open     ssh
80/tcp   open     http
111/tcp  open     rpcbind

Moehre and Sunshine are correct! Everything worked as soon as I changed the ports!

Well... until the server admin quicked me out, of course! It's spring cleaning time!  :sweatdrop:

but i was counting on some textures updates, but seems those where not updated yet...  :'(

It's pretty easy, you just have to remember that untill someone say so you should not update after a new release.
It screws files up.

And because of bugs being fixed the server is going up and down.
We're not evil. We're simply amazing.
