An aging system idea
« on: November 25, 2006, 05:43:54 am »
If a real character aging system is ever implemented in the game maybe we could have a workaround for it. For example there could be pits of liquid that spring up out of the ground that could be used to rejuvenate a person and make them younger if they bathe in it. The pits could randomly change position everyday or every other day so that we won't know where they're all the time. If we don't use one in time and we die from "old age" then some beings named "reapers" could carry our dead body to the nearest pit and throw us in. We would then wake up in the prime of our life (making us a baby would be ridiculous). What do you think about this idea?

I think if you were to do something like this you might want dying to take years off your life so that, for instance crawling out of the DR causes you to age 10 years. Also I would think that the rejuvenating effect would become less effective each time so that the first time it takes you back to 20, the second 25, and so on.

Once a character can no longer substantially rejuvenate to a youthful age and has reached their races life expectancy permanently or exceeded it what do you think should be done with that character? Should that character be deleted from the database by the server?

I would think that by that time the character would try to live an extremely peaceful life and try very hard not to die. It could even possibly be that nobody dies of old age and permanent death only comes if you die otherwise after your racial limit. Then I would propose that you could keep the character on the account but inactive and not taking up a usable slot. A web page could be made for notable characters that have passed.

I personally don't like the idea of characters being locked for this reason. Maybe it's just better to never make an aging system at all.

Just to avoid repeat arguments, I'm sharing links to some old threads on the topic:

Aging
stages of age/experiece
Avatar's age

The first one is especially thorough, and discusses a lot of pros/cons of an aging system in general. I personally wouldn't want to see that discussion done a second time, so I would recommend some reading.

That and the whole wishlist rule about, oh, making a duplicate thread will consitute a deletion of that thread.

Well, not entirely - this is a variation of an aging system that I don't think we have seen before :] It's unique - but the arguments against an aging system in general are not.

I certainly don't see any point to aging that doesn't lead to permanent death. I am also quite content to leave it at that. I do kind of like the idea of a notable character page for people who leave for whatever reason or just want to retire a particular character on a (semi?)-permanent basis. It might be that could have a reserve of say another 4 characters that have been retired and could be brought back for special occassions perhaps by disabling two of the active characters for the duration. I don't know if there would be any support for this idea.

@Karyuu
* neko kyouran nods

It was adding to the point you made when you listed the previous threads.  You made those links becuase you didn't want duplicate arguments.  I was adding onto that fact that if a duplicate argument started, it would be deleted.

Not referring to the idea variant stated in the opening thread post.  I'll just be quiet now.   :-X

Thank you for posting those links Karyuu. I read all 9 pages of the first link and a little bit of another one. :)

we could just have them keep aging forever and have skeletons walking around eventually then when we get sick of that we can crumble int a apile of dust and be blown by the breeze. convinietly u can make the breeze go the way u wana go and kill stuff u wana kill.... omg
* Gondric walks off and starts programming his own game where ur a pile off dust.
* Gondric comes back in 10 because he doesnt have the slightest idea why...
