Initial loading screen flickers (Ubuntu)
« on: November 27, 2006, 12:19:12 am »
Platform: Ubuntu Edgy Eft
Version: PlaneShift Crystal Blue 0.3.017

The loading screen flickers with a long rectangular pattern going up and down and a triangle formed by the top left, top right, and bottom corners. I've tried changing the settings from Setup to lower quality and maybe speed PlaneShift to the point that the refreshes are too quick for the eye to see, but to no avail. The flickering distracts from any gameplay action (I have yet to create an account and start playing).

No working mirrors are found by the updater, which could fix this problem.

I have the solution! I use Linux, Mac, and Windows, but my Linux is Ubuntu. I had the same problem. This is caused by a few things. 1. The graphic card. My card was left out for awhile until I found an installation program for it, but once I did, it worked great. 2. Your Ubuntu version. Ubuntu has many graphical problems that Windows doesn't. Most have been fixed in 6.06. And lastly, speed. Both your internet and computer speed greatly effect performance, mainly your processor. Hope this helps you.

This issue occurred for me when using the beta nvidia drivers in conjunction with aixgl and beryl.  If you've enabled beryl or compiz, try reverting to the metacity window manager before loading PS.

I have the same problem - flickering, and the window is split into to triangles flickering differently.

The problem:
can't have anything to do with the Ubuntu, since I have the same problem, with Debian Unstable.
can't have anything to do with graphics drivers for something special (because I use onboard graphics and I never had anything special to do) (but still, I'd like to know what installation program you're talking about?)
no problem of speed, because slow speed still doesn't flicker.

I continue to have this problem ingame as well, appartently always when the screen changes (when the screen loads and nothing moves, it doesn't flicker) - some problem with refresh rates??
I'd be happy if someone could help, since PlaneShift also doesn't work on my Mac (but with a crash a little bit harder than this here...)

Ah- and for all those who think ALSA wouldn't work - I have ALSA and I always hear sound!

Okay, after some hours of searching I finally found the problem!

I had to go into the Xorg config file, change the color depth from 24 to 16, reboot, and now it's okay - I'm still gonna try if 16 is better or 32.

I think that's more likely a problem of PlaneShift than my Xserver, is it?

24-bit depth isn't supported. Try 32-bit.
