Controversial funding
« on: February 27, 2003, 01:02:50 am »
I\'m sure a lot of people have thought of this, but not said anything about it.  Seeing as the 3d engine for Planeshift is incredible, it would be possible to have paid advertisements in public areas of the world, like bulletin boards, taverns and the like.  I know this sounds kinda like selling-out, and it is.  But if the team chose advertisers that they believe in or that have to do with fantasy gaming, it could be a way to render the game free indefinitely, and maybe put a little spending cash (of course, put back into the game  ;)  ;) ) and allow the developers to spend more time on the game.

kinda like in that movie Minority Report would be neat, the ads changing to what you like the most. Changing ads on the walls. etc

Read back a few pages, there is a post about this, there is no need for another one, it has all the answers.

I think from what I remember from the post Link is talking about, is that the devs are going to try and stay away from that as they don\'t want to ruin the gaming experience...but I wouldn\'t count it out

i\'d sacrifice the bit of the gaming experience to add more gaming experience that could be added by money from ads (like having enough servers to run the game, and other conveniences).

Well, posting advertisements through special connections (easy to get) can get you actually a lot of money.  My site makes close to $500-1000 a month from advertisements!

If Planeshift is interested, I could perhaps work something out with all of you ;) try to get you all hooked up... And no I would not demand money...

I think an issue with funding would eventually come, but this is perhaps when Planeshift is completely developed and there may be tremendous traffic to the servers. As part of Fragnetics which is contributing the Asian server I think we\'re very comfortable not getting anything out of direct connections made to the Planeshift server.

However, you can perhaps say that hosting the Planeshift server does give us some publicity as well, which is good cos it builds goodwill and really, since we\'re running so much open-source software on our system this is perhaps one way we can return the favour to the community.

Just to be frank we\'re hoping that eventually hosting Planeshift will pay off in some way. If it gets really big then perhaps there may be a need for ads at least on the website. Otherwise we may just have to offer side-line services such as webhosting and related stuff to interested parties who have read about our involvement in Planeshift.

Still, it\'s important to note that under our agreement with the Planeshift team we are not allowed to demand payment for members connecting to the Planeshift server - So it clearly draws the line and ensures Planeshift\'s core game will remain free to all.

Chris,

The Planeshift Team would like to express its gratitude to the Fragnetics group for donating the server.  I know we all appreciate your charity and altruism.

One thing that comes to mind that might help you somewhat would be to put a link on the planeshift.frag.com webpage to your main site and a little explanation of what Fragnetics is all about.
