ok um the file is on my computer i just downloaded the game except for this 1 problem

its just a file data thing and when i click on it it saids would u like to chose what it is from a list or search the internet and its not in my all programs help i rly rly want to play this game i saw screen shots and it looks kick ass

What operating system are you using, and are you sure you downloaded the right client for that operating system?

im not big on cpus so whats that, sorry i suck with computers and i dont know a pop up came when i clicked download and it startedc downloading how do i make sure its from the right program, i just spent a hour downloading and dont really feel like re downloading....

You've downloaded the wrong file. you want the .exe

The installer comes as an .exe, which should begin the installation as soon as you double-click on it. Perhaps what you have downloaded is the BitTorrent link?

That link is to Mirror 3 on the Downloads page, and it has the same file as do all the other mirrors. Pay attention to what you are clicking - a BitTorrent file to PS is not the same thing as using a mirror.

He said it took an hour to download the file originally. .Torrent files, as you know, take all of 2 seconds to download...
What's the exact extension (the letters after the dot, e.g. wmplayer.exe) It's possible the file he downloaded was compressed or something (like by WinRar or 7-Zip) and he doesn't have the right program to decompress it... (though I don't see why that would be)

On another note... I hope you don't plan to talk like that in the actual game, Mr. Yelper. PlaneShift is about role-playing, not being "kick ass". Not only that, but it's in Alpha-testing Phase, meaning it's far from finished, and may not be as "kick ass" as it looks...

All the uploads on the mirrors end with a .exe - so perhaps he ended up downloading a client for another OS? There's really nothing else I can think of :] He got it working afterwards though, so I guess we'll never know...

Oh. I actually discovered and downloaded Planeshift via the 'RPG' directory of torrentspy. I was thinking along the lines of someone else hosting a  compressed version of the file and him finding it (which would make it an even faster download... I'm surprised it wasn't compressed in the first place...)

Anyway, are you assuming he got it working because he didn't post or because he pmed you?

Hmm? It is compressed. Compressing the .exe installer with bzip2 yielded a slightly larger file, as expected. Likewise, the .exe (~235MB) is significantly smaller than the contents of the installed folder (~300MB).
