Rayjak's Diary
« on: December 13, 2006, 10:21:50 am »
(( Hope I'm doing this right ))

Day 1,

I have`finally arrived in Yliakum. It was an arduous journey: I snuck aboard a private mining winch. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but I managed to hide amongst the tonnes of iron ore without being crushed. Hopefully whoever was after me thinks I'm still in... my city.
...
I guess it's time I tell you who I am. My name is Rayjak (as I'm sure you can tell by the cover). My surname is too dangerous to enclose in this journal... I don't know exactly why, but I'm being hunted. Hunted by people who I've never met or even heard of before - yet they all seem to know me. Some of them are subtle - try to lure me away- others... less so. I've managed to escape most of the encounters with these people, but it couldn't go on forever, so I took some drastic measures to disguise myself and then fled to Yliakum. Here. I have a feeling I won't allude these people for long though.

That's why I've begun this journal - Insurance. If I can't use this to bargain with my pursuers, and I'm captured... or worse, at least I could have the hope that someone may find this journal and find out what's going on. In the meantime, I'll try to find some answers and update this as regularly as I can.

Day 1 (second entry),

Searching for a tout, I approached a crowd of people surrounding a blacksmith. The smithy introduced himself as 'Harnquist' and offered me some pricy weapons. I brought little money with me, and I needed it for food and provisions, so I declined. As I turned to leave, a man approached me. "You looking for something special," he asked pleasantly. I asked him if he knew the city and what the sights are. He introduced himself as Manim, and beckoned me to follow him.

Of all the places to bring a fresh tourist, he brought me to the town sewers, and advised me to hunt rats! He laughed at my surprise and told me that most people make their first Trias by butchering rats and selling their appendages at the Arena. I asked if he had any other money-making tips, and he recommended investing in mining once I'd gotten enough practice. We said our goodbyes, and I decided to continue into the sewers to investigate.

One thing I wasn't expecting was how fiercesome those bloody 'rats' can be! Despite it's apparent popularity, rat-hunting is not for the faint-of-heart. Especially when you have nothing to fight with but your bare knuckles. Within a few hours I was above ground again, nursing some fairly severe rat-bites. They're healing quite nicely, but it's late now and I haven't managed to find any inns. Looks like I'll be sleeping rough tonight. Ah well, I'm getting used to it, and these wings I have now make it somewhat comfortable. Glad they have some use beyond causing me terrible back pain.

Day 2,

This was quite a day.
Woke up stiff. Needing a drink. I decided I had room in my budget for some Yliakum ale. I could do without food for a while... So, I decided to find a tavern. Besides whetting my whistle, it seemed like the best place to find a guide. Unfortunately, after wandering around aimlessly for a while I found myself quite lost. Just as I was getting worried, a man came up to me. He didn't say his name... In fact, he didn't say anything. I tried to ask him some questions about where I was and how to leave, but he simply stared. After a few more unanswered questions I turned away in frustration.

As I was about to leave, I felt a tug at my belt. Spinning around, I saw the man grinning through his gritty black beard, clutching my coin-purse. He ran, and I pursued him for quite a while, untiI I tripped and he managed to lose me. Luckily, he'd led me back to familiar ground. I tried in vain to find him again but there was a lot of ground to cover. As I gave up, a feline creature stepped up to greet me. It spoke our language perfectly. (I'd heard these beings spoke another language, and the 'man' seemed mildly offended that I would think so. Maybe It was just my imagination...)

The creature (or Enkidukai) introduced itself (I'm still not sure if it was male or female...) as 'Myriel Tierubi'. She/he was a great help, telling me of some of the city's highlights, as well as offering me a set of daggers to fend off any more thieves I might encounter (or rats, for that matter). It felt good to have steel in my hands again. Then something odd happened.

I fainted. At least that's what it looked like. When I woke up, Myriel was gone, and it was at least a few hours later. I still had the daggers (my only real positions at this point), so it can't have been a robbery. I wondered if Myriel was some sort of assassin, or spy even (considering she left me alive). Maybe I should seek out a healer...
