Immediate game crash (in Windows and Linux)
« on: December 14, 2006, 05:53:56 am »
Hello folks.

I'm having some problems trying to load the game (after character creation).  Basically, the game crashes as soon as the world loads.  I've gotten some .dmp files from the Windows crash (and sent them to the woman working on those...from the sticky in this forums other section).  This happens in both Windows and Linux (openSUSE 10.2).

I think I read somewhere that it might be a problem with the area where I'm starting, and that I can request a Game Master to move me to another starting location.  How do I do that?  What do you need from me to do for this to work?

Thanks for your help.

Hi!

Sorry I haven't yet got the time to look at the dumps. Unfortunately, I have been pretty busy.

Yes, since you have the problem in both OS it might be an area issue and some GM might have to move you. However, it might also not be that but one of the problems with the character description window. Do you have the font size quite small or quite big?

To quote that little girl who crashed at the bear's house...I think it's about just right. :)  I don't squint at the screen, nor do I have to scroll down just to read a couple words.

Maybe I'll try and create another character.

Also, don't worry about looking at the dumps.  This is a FOSS game.  I realize that everyone working on it is volunteering.  Take your time.

I would try downscaling the font size in the PS setup. Change it to 70% and try connecting again. If it works, edit your character's description and remove longer lines that otherwise would wrap over to the next line with a larger font size. After that you can restore the original font size.

Changed the font scaling to 70, then 60, then 50.  It's still crashing.  The world (if it loads) loads for about 5 seconds, then crashes.

What is your character's name? I will try to move you to somewhere else, but I still think it is related to long lines in the description.

Midalen Snwod.

Yeah, I tried creating a new character, but now I'm back to the same problems I was having in the first thread I posted here (about the client disconnecting from the server and shutting down).  Do you think I've got some sort of hardware problem?

Ack.  It didn't work. :(

Hmm.  I wonder what the problem could be.  I don't have any exotic hardware or anything.  And my internet connection works with A Tale in the Desert (which is the other MMORPG I play).  Strange.

I managed to open your description before you crashed and I see the line "You rescued a family from a burning house" there. I still think that this long line in your description crashes the client. At least in my client the "house" word would go to the next line.

If the font scaling trick didn't work, download this file to your data/gui directory (C:\Program Files\Planesift Crystal Blue\data\gui on Windows): chardescwindow.xml. You may need to right-click on the link and select "Save Link As" or whatever you have in your browser.

Did this.  It crashed once.  I started again, and got to walk around for about 10 seconds...(checked my profile and none of my descriptions were over two lines)...and then it crashed again. :)

I have been extracting the dumps in the dump thread. They are the first two of this message:
http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26465.msg302972#new

To m, the first one looks like there is some problem loading some map. The second is a bit more tricky, but that is not the real dump that we should focus on, since it has happened to snwod quite seldom.

Recently, I've been getting both dump codes (about a 2:1 ratio).  I just can't understand how both installs on my computer could be experiencing the same problem.  Do you think it might have something to do with my location?  Are there any other players playing from East Asia?

I honestly don't think it is "location" dependant, in the sense depending from where you sit.

Any progress on this?

Me, I reinstalled Windows and went back to my old, trusted Kerio Personal Firewall.  Downloaded the client again, fired up the game, and got the same crash.

I don't get it. :(
