I think that the character is funny.  There where people with disabltys in the middle ages thoug.  I don't think this character sounds like he has that tpye of madness.

He sounds more like a person that has trobal with his speech and dose not know what is socialie accpetable.  It sounds more like he is manltey disable.  That was apectied if some had prombles as such but not apectied if

Actually, Vexus is a little more complex than that :P Long story short, he was a normal scholar who wanted to learn more of the Dark Way, so he joined a snake-worshipping cult who promised him limitless knowledge. But their teaching methods involved a lot of torture rituals which ultimately resulted in his insanity. (That, and they cut out his tongue, replacing it with a serpent's)

Anyway, Zan's right. Bowel control is an important part of being a good RPer :P

The thing I don't understand is how everyone feels compelled to compare Planeshift to real-life medieval times. People don't seem to realise just how much things like magic and alternative races can change a society...  I mean, mobile phones completely changed society, and they've got nothing on magic.

A community of people needs rules which keep at least the large majority satisfied and prevent problems .. medieval times are the best reference.

You really want us to emulate medieval society? No soap, barely any art, very little medical knowledge, a totally inept judicial system... need I go on?

Also, a single phrase of OOC clarification can save you thousands of lines of misunderstanding.

If I do something that someone is likely to misunderstand and take offense to, then shame on me.

However, if I do something that someone misunderstands and takes offense to for no good reason, I'll only explain their mistake to them if I'm feeling charitable.  The /ignore function is there for a reaso, and I won't always refrain from using it to make my own life more pleasant.

I'm assuming by 'medieval', you're referring to the Dark Ages or before. Renaissance and up doesn't really count as medieval in my opinion...

Anyway, my point is this is an MMORPG, not a feudalist reenactment society.

I can't make you or anyone else want anything, nor do I intend to try .. but yeah, I want to create a more medieval world in my roleplay. No soap, I'd sure hope nobody waves a bar of 'Dove' in my face but regular perfumed animal fat has been around long before the middle ages. Barely any art .. I think we can say that Hydlaa is no Venice. Very little medical knowledge, magic healing not included .. check. A totally inept judical system .. oh definitely, the guards hardly care about anything besides themselves and I'm not even talking about the people who are supposed to be in charge.

Either way, I don't think we need to go on and can just agree to disagree on this.

As long as there have been people there has been art. From primitive representations of earth goddesses to post modernism and beyond, creativity is something that sets humans above the animals (except maybe elephants  ;D. Wikipedia has a whole page on medieval art. Certainly the monks painstakingly copying the manuscripts with illuminations would be one form of art, another would be bejeweled or ornate crosses and other religious icons.

As far as medical knowledge goes there is a long history of herbal lore although there was little enough real understanding. Nothing has changed in the justice department either, the powerful still abuse the powerless now they just have more finesse.

Yup.  The Renaissance is a good marker for the end of the Dark Ages.  Renaissance = The Rebirth, the rebirth of the classical era.  Literature, philosophy, enlightened / scientific thinking, everything Greek / Hellenistic....

If it is "medieval" in the RW European sense... then Steel must be cutted off from the metallurgy skills... as in this:

"In the early 17th century, ironworkers in western Europe had found a means (called cementation) to carburize wrought iron. Wrought iron bars and charcoal were packed into stone boxes, then held at a red heat for up to a week. During this time, carbon diffused into the iron, producing a product called cement steel or blister steel"
Thus Before the 1610s any process of making steel was unknown on Europe.

Also, with the medieval knowledge on engineering and architeture, making something like the Temple of Laanx or like the Eagle Fortress at the Bronze Doors would be impossible... so they must be cutted down too.

Also the Xachas must be cutted down... their culture is too scientifical for a medieval world!

And of course... the political system is too complex and far from Feudalism to be medieval (Octarchy instead of Monarchy and indirect elections)... so just put a king in the place of the Octarchs and several feudal lords controlling the levels and warring against them!

I think PS should only keep a medieval style, but should not enforce excessively it... This is another world and a fantasy game... not a realistic representation of medieval Europe...

And it would require several changes on its history to make it more "realistic" to medieval times... so it is a major waste of time to do it and it would break the original Planeshift setting apart...

.... Back on topic

Those weird characters really make my day, they add some colour to the RP and make things more interesting... but I do not think they would simply annoy around without any consequences...

It might be going to far with the idea but........

........ You could say everything completely backwards  such as     -

"?enim uoy od erehw" would mean "where do you mine?"  it would be taken more as on purpose or that your dislextic. The latter would be what your going for though.
