so... now what?
« on: December 25, 2006, 02:16:38 am »
ok, i'm a total newbie to this game (actually this kind of game...). My problem is that I can do anything in the game, so now i'm standing in the town with no objective and has no idea what to do. Yea, I ran around the town a few times, picking up a few apples, meeting a few NPCs (the only lines they seem to recognize is "hi" and "hello"), but still, i don't know what to do.

Basically, I'm lost. Sure there are a some players in the town, but it feels weird just run up to them and ask "what should I do now?". I've read there are minings and stuff but they are kinda vague on where and how, besides, i don't really like to be doing heavy labour in the game (after all, I've got enough work in real life).

So, anyone got a suggestion as to what I should do? I've got nothing useful in my inventory and has no money (trias, whatever you call them).

Welcome to PlaneShift and the boards

Have you taken a look at the Guides and Tutorials section? There are a few threads there that may help you out, such as Getting Started In-Game. Take a moment to browse through - if you feel like you'll need further guidance, just post back.

Thing is, this kinda game doesn't tell you what to do. There is no big bad boss that needs an asskicking before he floods the world into chaos ... well there may be a few players like that but yeah. Basically you do whatever you want to, go chat a bit at the tavern while drinking, go hunt rats in the sewers or just explore and roam around the world.

Use your imagination. It's up to you and only you to create a reason for your character to be alive. This is one of the only games out there where you have that freedom.

He could be the typical hero who wants to save the world and help people.
He could want to make as much money as possible by whatever means necessary.
He could even be a psychotic who wants to murder everyone and see the world in flames.

You'll have to go off and mull it over yourself...
And read my guide while you're at it, Mr. Noob. It was practically designed to answer this question... thank you very much Kar :P

Standing around typing in a bar drinking digital ale is what i would call: BORING. But then so is mining. And repairing weapons, and "RP"ing.

I came to this game to fight and die(in case the name is not clue enough). Fortunately there's quite a lot of that too....so i'm happy. The rest of the stuff, i just don't get though. In my estimation the weaponr repair times- though realistic- are totally disengaging. Especially since you dont want people just going AFK while doing tasks(like repairing a sword from a quality of 5 back to 50, which takes a long time).  If i wanted to roleplay i'd just pretend to like my significant other here in the real world. ;)

Valorius:

If you find roleplay boring and are not interested in trying it out, you may find yourself rather alienated here. PlaneShift is a game that is planned primarily for roleplayers, and not people who just come in to kill stuff. Talking IC (in-character) is always encouraged, and if there is roleplay going on but you're busily chatting away about out-of-character things and get people complaining, you may get a GM to nudge you as a reminder that RP takes priority here. There are hundreds of games out there that are made primarily for the things you said you are looking for - fighting and killing. PlaneShift just isn't one of them, so keep this in mind.

My friend, i was playing (the original) D&D long before most of you were alive(in fact i bought the original D&D within 90 days of it's original introduction...before there were any video games but pong!), so i am an old pro at RP'ing. There is nothing new to me in this or any other game when it comes to RPing(forgive me if that sounds concieted, but...).

The Role i play in your game is of a gruff-and disinterested feline warrior maiden who is happiest when she is spilling blood. Like most people who share that view(and like most cats), i have little time for pleasantries or idle-chit chat, nor am i warm and fuzzy, though to those who are kind to me, i am equally kind in return. ;)

It would have helped if you added some of that information into your previous post :] Based on what you wrote, "standing around typing....boring...."RP"ing..." you seemed like another hack-and-slasher excited at a prospect of a free game. Of course, my apologies as I was mistaken. It seemed a good idea to add a reminder about the purposes of the game to clear up any misconceptions that may have floated around.

Successfuly?  One or two people around.

Although there are tons of guilds around that are failing at it :D

That's because of the common misconception that evil = killing random people, where that's just one small possibility :P Not helped by the fact that we haven't done much work for the evil side of things. It's something we can work on for sure.

Added to which, once you get a good evil guild going, the leader usualy pansies out and becomes a Dev.

So you're saying that running a successful evil guild is a good way to become a dev? :P Figures really, we love doing database wipes. Besides, usually there's a competent underling ready to take things over after the leader leaves, although that's not always the case <.<
