Don't be afraid to RP it!
« on: December 27, 2006, 06:09:00 am »
I've been playing PS for three days now and think it's fantastic, even at this early stage.  But for it to be the best that it can, there has to be some rules!

1. DON'T BE YOURSELF

These kind of experiences allow you to escape from the drudgery of reality and let you inhabit the body and mind of someone completely different.
So BE different!

2. WALK, DON'T RUN

Inside cities, it is always better to walk.  How many people in your town/city will you see running!?
In between cities running can be a necessity, but otherwise it's just a waste of stamina.  Not only that but you just might barge past someone who could do with your help, which takes me on to rule 3.

3. ALWAYS LEND A HELPING HAND

If you want to be a completely evil character(IMO a dwarf, but that's just my experience!) you can ignore this rule.  However, stopping to help someone who has fallen by the wayside should always result in a heartfelt thankyou or maybe even a reward, and never forget that you were once one of those people.  Imagine how you would feel!!

Like I said, I've been here for 3 days and (though I have barely any trias, skills or progression points) I have quite a few friends, an upcoming marriage and a deep respect for the developers of this (what will be a phenomenal) game.

Keep it Real People, Keep it RP

Thankyou for your time.

One more converted, excellent ;D

By the way even those who are 'evil' can help but they might do it in a reluctant grumpy way ... or expect a thing or two in return. Being 'evil' doesn't mean doing the wrong thing all the time. Nobody does that .. 'evil' people only do the right thing for themselves and don't care about others, unless those others are a way to improve the self. ;)

I honestly think that you will soon end up getting a little bored of walking everywhere.

I'm not saying walking isn't boring.

I'm saying, from a newcomers POV.  If everybody charges about, then they all pass you before you get your chat window open.
IMO, I've managed to grasp quite a bit in 3 days.  I'm just trying to spread the knowledge and if everybody did the same, the place might not end up looking like an out-take from the keystone cops!!

Walking isn't fast and exciting, but have you never decided to just walk about and help those in need.  Laanx knows I have!!

We will all benefit greatly from a little bit of give and take.  However, as in real life, it is up to each individual what they want to do.

I very often just walk around purely  with the aim of helping people, It is pretty much what my guild aims to do, But if you mean just walking about in the general course of questing and training and such then that is what would get pretty boring.

Also you tend to get a good sense for when someone needs your help, especially when leaving the death realm or seeing people walking round the plaza many times.

I almost always walk, much to the dislike of anybody I am guiding.

And as an Evil character, I help people out a lot.

All the same, great post

I have a character that never runs, only if it would be to save his life he'd run very short distances. It's an old man with bad joints who has walked towards Ojaveda, the Bronze Door fortress and more several times. Sure travelling is boring if you go alone .. nobody stops you from taking some friends along though.

I found that some of my friends wanted me to come along on trips just so they'd have an excuse to walk instead of rush past everything. It'd take a lot to make my character run and who doesn't like that can rush off alone. I also found that when you walk around people will stop and interact with you a whole lot more.

So do I get bored of walking ... definitely not as much as I got bored of running around all by myself.

I frequently spend time in Ojaveda looking for those who appear to be new and could use a little guidance.  I have met some really great RP'ers that way.  And those who aren't quite as good at keeping IC and OOC straight usually just don't know.  I give them a few tips to get them started off on the right foot.  When I'm in Oja with this purpose, I almost always walk, or even just stand near a high traffic area and make myself available.

I was very pleased when I discovered that I could walk with a friend while being able to type text, hold a conversation and walk to my desination. Very realistic.

It amazes me how many people whine to have the game realistic but can't even be bothered to do the actions in game that would make it that way. For those of you who haven't tried walking, give it a try. You might be surprized at the fun it can provide. You might also be pleased that you don't have to rush your text before you hit that tree, and might even learn something about the person your walking with rather than apologizing for your spelling mistakes. Trust me on this one.  ;)

Yes 3 days is short, but I did't 'pop the question', she did.

It doesn't matter now though as a marriage is no longer on the cards.  The whole point of my topic is, You can have a lot more fun in the game if you RP.  Just a small conversation with a complete stranger can yield very interesting results.

Thanks to everyone for your comments/arguments.  I am looking forward to many more!!

You do know that RPing is the primary focus of the game, right? As in, that's why people play it. The few people who don't know that will probably never know that, 'cause they're 'special' like that...  :P

Telling people to RP in Planeshift is like telling people to shoot stuff in Halo.

That's an interesting point about walking vs. running though. Problem is, in a world where most people rush around, you'll be getting left behind a lot.  Not to mention that it's a long way to Ojaveda as it is, without making it three times longer by going three times slower...

We're supposed to shoot stuff in Halo?  Well who woulda thunk it?   :D

I can see both sides of the point.  Yes, it is a long walk between Ojaveda and Hydlaa.  But, as was pointed out, if you have a traveling companion, have a conversation on the way.  Besides, if you run, you end up draining your stamina to the point of having to stop and have a chat anyway.  Might as well walk.  :)

i cant help but be a little myself :\ it goes against my soul to be mean or "evil" and i think the way i think so i sound crazies sometimes...i try more so to expand myself and let kalika do waht i wish i could do or say or act.

shes like my elevated conscience

but thats jsut how i personally play...maybe it makes me a bad rper *shrugs* but i like to see and talk about pretty things..so im willing to take the judgement :P

but for other people ehhehe yeah i agrees, dont be yourself :P

Kalika's right. Stick to your own style. There's no absolutes in art. (I would say 'writing', but people don't seem to get that when I say 'writing' I mean 'whenever words come together into a sentence', not writing thriller novels :P)
In fact, most of the classics... Shakespeare, Dickens, Burgress, Joyce, etc. became 'classic' for writing in completely unique and bizarre styles. And most of the so-called critics of their time put them down for that.

(And besides, most great artists have terrible egos. It's expected that they include themselves in their masterpieces somehow :P)
