blacksmith system
« on: March 02, 2003, 10:23:00 am »
I came up with an idea, that i have found from somewhere else, to raise your stading with the blacksmith so to be able of seeing better goods, u could bring in scrap metal .U could find the scrap, with enemy loot. And when u have reached a certain amount your standing increases and u are able of seeing better goods and maybe for a lower price then with the normal merchants.
Tell me what u think of it,....

Killing and Looting should not be part of the blacksmith system, unless this is just another crappy game where the whole word revolves around your combat skill.

Let\'s not get into a religous debate here. (I\'m athiest by the way) I\'ve never seen a really good mining system in a game, and if it did, all the mines were packed with monsters and stuff, so you either needed a friend with combat to come protect you, or you needed combat. Morrowind COULD have had a good mining and crafting system, but it just didn\'t. You couldn\'t really MAKE anything in morrowind, you had to go kill and steal everything, and it didn\'t respawn.

Side note - Yeah, the Morrowind \"Crafting\" system was rather bogus.  Mayhap, in Development, they simply put it off until the last minute and packaged it away with no care for the system being weak/unfinished/unfulfilling.  Or they just did not wish to bother with it, but I digress...

As for the Blacksmithing/Ore-Gaining idea, it is a tricky balance if done that way.  If Blacksmiths themselves are not able to fight to get metals, they must rely on others to guard them or bring in such items (which generally costs money).

Now, if I were a Blacksmith who had someone guarding me while I mined away, I would most certainly ask them if they required anything smithed as payment for helping.  But not all players operate on their word like I do.

In another MMORPG I played (Dark Ages), I could polish gems as a Rogue.  I went out and hunted my own materials, then sold my stock for a VERY tidy profit.  Sometimes high-up players needed something polished and supplied the gems and labor required.  Generally, tips for actually helping them were added for good taste.

On top of that, I could also purchase Gems to polish from one specific NPC if I did not find what was needed.  The NPC materials merchant was a handy thing to have around, and it could be considered for future Blacksmiths/Armorsmiths/Weaponsmiths/Ringsmiths/etc.

However, what is the true difference between buying from NPCs and players who went out to hunt?  Not much, and I\'d bet the prices would be the same.  On top of that, how would the Blacksmiths gain money in the first place to begin their business?  Begging?  Blacksmith Guild Support?  Promises to others?  Stealing?  Killing?  Non-combat based Quests with money as the prize?

It\'s a vicious game cycle where most of them have to run around bashing monsters.  Sad, but true.

Somebody who would want to be a fulltime blacksmith, could always join the BISM. The basic idea would be that someone would get some startup money in exchange for (future) blacksmith work. If he betrayes this trust, nobody of the BISM would deal with him anymore. This may not seem like much, but if the BISM becomes as important as I think it will, you wouldn\'t want to be on their \'ignore list\'.

These are just my personal thoughts though, feel free to (try to) flame me if you disagree. ;)

As my response to some of the recent replies to this thread (and indeed the first post) I want to think back on the-game-that-must-not-be-named and how that crafting system worked.

A mouse induced click-fest full of the ordinary people who want to one-day reap the rewards of the smithing hierachy.  I think of an old Monty Python song and make my own adaption of it, just because the system was boring me so much.  It went something like this: (to the tune of \"I\'m a lumberjack\")

\"I\'m a miner and I like to pray
For a good online game that I-can-play!
I just so wish
To be able to smith
And not waste my entire day!\"

I don\'t want to be crafting songs out of boredom in PS, so please please PLEASE bring a better system than the-game-that-must-not-be-named.
Don\'t be brash and take that stash of hash you found in the trash, it won\'t get you cash but you will dash out to splash something on the nasty rash it gives you.

I cut down trees
I wear high heels
Supendies and a bra
I wish I was a girlie
Just like my dear mama

I\'m a lumberjack and I\'m OK!
I sleep all night and I work all day

I love that song!!!

Anyway. Crafting systems, and blacksmithy especially. I think combat should come into it, but at a later stage. IE at a time when the person can actually afford to get some muscly backup. Ordinary materials (Iron, normal wood, stone etc...) should be easily attainable without 5 brawny warriors standing by to keep down the hordes of orcs. But advanced material (mythril, ebony, quartz for example) should need some warriors around. Which makes parties going out to gain these precious materials all the more usefull. Of course there is the argument that if everything needed grouping, then the game would suck. I\'ve seen this weakness.
