Tradable Services
« on: March 02, 2003, 04:22:00 pm »
I find it rather weird that scam is such a big issue in most mmorpg\'s, while it can so easily be avoided.

If sevices - like repairing stuff, smelting bars, indentifying items, etc (examples, I don\'t know if these will be in planeshift) - were tradable in the same way as goods and money, scam would be virtually impossible, plus it would open the way for people to provide services to eachother without the hindrance of constant distrust.

So... What do you think?

I don\'t quite follow your proposed system but the idea of trade skills cooperation happening I\'m all ears for a solution.
Don\'t be brash and take that stash of hash you found in the trash, it won\'t get you cash but you will dash out to splash something on the nasty rash it gives you.

Imagine a common trading system. Player 1 puts the stuff he offers in his offer-box and player 2 offers stuff in his box in return. Normally you can only insert inventory items and money into the box. Now, you can also insert a small icon representing a \'repair offer\' or \'smelt offer\'. When player 1 offers a repair, another screen pops up in which player 2 can offer an item he wants repaired. In this example player 2 wants his \'sword\' repaired, so he puts it in. Then the \'repair offer\' icon changes into \'repair sword\' and appears in player 1\'s offer box. If player 1 wants money in return for this service, player 2 will have to insert some money into his offer box.

When both players accept the deal, player 2\'s offered money will be given to player 1 and player 1 automatically starts to repair player 2\'s sword, which is then automatically given to player 2 again.

I hope that clears it up.

Rhombus - I must say that is an interesting idea!  Maybe you should expand it even a tad more and formally submit it to the PS Dev Team.  It would add a unique twist to the MMOG/RPG market.

Side note - an anti-theft system should be added.  I would not wish to give someone a sword to repair and they instead run off with it (especially if it were rare).  Or they could turn into \"Wanted Criminals\" with bounties, whichever floats the boat higher.  ;)

How about during the trade, the person offering the sword to be traded gives a time limit. That time limit is the max time person 2 can take to repair it. If person 2 runs away, once that time is up it re-appears in person 1\'s inventory. Or maybe you could make it respawn at a lost and found where only that person can get it back.

Thanks. Submitting the idea to the devs isn\'t neccessary, because the devs read these forums themselves, even though most of them don\'t post here.

Yes, I do understand that the Dev Team reads the message boards.  However, there is a difference between posting it on a Forum and typing up a detailed outline and emailing the idea to the Dev Team in a more official manner...  Hence why I said \"formally submit\" it.

But whatever floats your boat.  ;)

the thiefing part could b prevented like it is done in DAOC
(this game has that repair feature already)
u select the option repair. and then the exchange window keeps open untill the weapon or whatever is fixed, then the accept button on both sides changes from greyed out to being clickable.
the cancel button just returns the unfixed item to its owner even if the crafter already repaired it. it will b in same shape as before (repairing doesn\'t cost anything, just the skill is needed for being able to do it).
btw. a nice addition would b doing enchantments this way as well.

That is a nice idea, or even an escort service could be implented!

Get me from point A to point B without being killed for this amount of money.

etc. etc.

Perhaps this could be an extension of the PStealing concept concocted a few threads back, where the scamming person would become a PKable or jailable outlaw.

Making scammers pkable people would be cool, get those dirty people back! But if you did that I think that their stats should go down 20% or something to make them an easier target :D. C\'mon, who\'d want to scam if you were able to be killed by all the n00bs to the game? Sounds like it might nearly eliminate scamming.

or, you could implement a system like rhombus was suggesting(great idea) ad eliminate scammers altogether...well, except for the few ppl who are dumb enough to do floor trades and such...
