I'm bad at making thread titles so this is a thread title

Reading K's comments about what her major is for college and what's shes doing and what not has given me the idea to ask you all for your knowledge on the following subject.

Tomorrow marks the first day in which I go from student to teacher and join the ranks of the many fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it) soles to become professors of a college introductory Visual Studio .Net 2005 programming class.

The students in my class are all high school seniors on thier last semester before they graduate.   :whistling:  They are all tech prep students, and are taking college courses while still attending high school.  Knowing how high school seniors can be, since I was one only 3 years ago and the memories are still fresh in my mind, I would like to start off the class with a bang of some sorts, to get their attention, to motivate them.  Otherwise, they might just go through the motions just to get the class over with and graduate.  That won't help them if they plan to continue thier schooling though, so that's why I'd like them to start off on the right step.

Anyways, I'm going to try to get them interested by showing them why learning programming can actually be a good thing.  So I thought I'd load up the PS client for one.  Show em whats being made here.  Who knows, maybe one or two of em will be interrested enough to take a closer look at PS.

The course consists primarily of me teching the VB coding language.  I believe PS is written in mainly C++ correct?

I'd like to relate other popular games to whch languages they were written in but haven't had the time to do the research yet.  If anyone knows what language, say WoW, or some other main stream game is written in, if you don't mind, add a post to the thread.  I'm thinking it's something like 70% of the main stream games are written in C++, but I'm not positive on that statistic.

If anyone has any info on some major programs/games/what not written in VB and wouldn't mind sharing, that'd be nice too.

Thanks all.

Meh, I'm used to being ignored.   :whistling:

To be honest, I wasn't really expcting any replies.  Kinda made the thread on short notice.

And since you asked...it went as I expected it to go.  The first half hour of class was spent trying to fix the projector, folled by having o reinstall Visual studio on 5 outta the 20 workstations do to corrupt installs.  In the mean time I figured I'd show em PS as an example but upon installing, it said the updater needed to run, but then couldn't connect to any mirrors to fetch updates from, so it never let me log in.

Sooo, all in all, just a typical IS based class.   :sweatdrop:

Edit, I ended up showing the "evil ways" vid instead.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what to tell you except to share with your students the reasons you feel passionate about what you do.

yes most programs are made in C/C++, and other languages like Java borrow stuff from C/C++
