The 60-second rule
« on: January 25, 2007, 11:09:24 pm »
I've been having problems with the forum's anti-spam filter that stops people from posting within 60 seconds.

I've played around with it, and it appears that when you attempt to post a message within 60 seconds of the last one, the message is registered, whether or not it actually went through. (Although it doesn't show up or effect post counts)

In other words, when I try to post, first it will say "You have posted a message in the last 60 seconds, please wait and try again." Then I wait the 60 seconds and try again and it says "You have already posted this message. Perhaps you hit the 'send' button twice."

Then, when I refresh and try again, it goes back to the "You have posted a message in the last 60 seconds, please wait and try again" message and I have to wait another 60 seconds.

The only way to overcome this seems to be if I stop trying to post, save my message and exit the thread, then completely try again 60 seconds later.

Which browser are you running?  I run Firefox, and on the occassion when I reply to too many PMs in under 60 seconds, I get that "wait 60 seconds" thing, I then push the back link under the message.  It then takes me back to my message I was going to send, and I wait for 60 seconds, then I push the send button and it sends.

I have tested to see if it actually does send it or not, and it never has.  I believe after you get the message and then try to send it again, your web browser is being stupid.

Or, you could just talk less.  :whistling:

Have you tried waiting two minutes, just to be sure?

Whenever you get the "You have already posted a message in the last 60 seconds" thing, you have to wait another minute before your post will go through. In the beginning I made the mistake of thinking that this particular message doesn't reset the counter.

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Select all, cut the text.  Go back to the thread.  Make a new reply.

I do that too. When you get that "wait a minute..." message and you click on back, for some odd reason the "submit" button won't work anymore. So I just copy my message and repost after a while.

Its not odd, its just that the code stops it from being pressed more than once, and when you press the back button, the code is still set to stop it being resent. So you have to completely refresh.

Hmm, if the "back" button on the page itself simply calls the browser's back function, then it makes sense for the page to stop working.
Doesn't happen to me on forums like React though, but hey, React is Dutch and I don't blame SMF for not being that ;)

Tried once within 30 seconds, then again over 60 seconds after that

Aaaand it went through. That's odd...
Maybe I just don't know how long 60 seconds really is :P
