Names
« on: March 08, 2003, 12:40:47 am »
I was wondering if there could be example names on the races page, that way we have a sort of idea how to name our characters with race specifications, that will make identifying someone easier in my opinion, and also make it more RP like.  :)
Name: Frankuuu
Race: Dermorian Elf
Chosen Path: Warrior
Alignment: Neutral
Guild: N/A
Location: Yliakum

I fight for my destiny, if yours crosses mine, the only outcome is for me to prevail, whether you live or not depends on if you get in my way...

Not bad FMiddy, but I think it would be better if the devs incuded a \"name-generator\" in the game (just an idea). When you choose your race you will have the opportunity to generate a name for your character, or create your own (based on the generated names). The generated names should be different depending on what race you choose to be.

BTW. I think that players with names like \"counterstrike-master\" or \"Iamsogood\" and the likes should be forced to recreate their character (or at least change their name)
EDIT: It should be the same to players with \"real names\" like \"Bill Clinton\", \"Britney Spears\", \"Helly Hansen\" etc.

Yeah, names like that kinda lower the rpg fantasy-ness. What about last names? Or a \"of the clan-\" after their name.

I think having a kinda profile idea would be cool. You could right click on a person, and you\'d be able to see their profile, which would include: Race, name, guild, and a small bit that they put in there. Another option when you right click should be trade or something similar.

Name generators work good.

There should also be a way prohibit some names from even being created, stuff like Frodo or Gandalf, those names should stay in Middle-Earth, in my opinion.

I\'m sure you can find a name generator on the web.

But not one specific to PS races, I think it might be a nice touch in the future and give people an idea of the style of name for the different races - especially when eventually you want the game to be populated by RP names and not \'undercoverbrutha\' (sorry if I used your name as an example - just the first one that popped into my head that I\'ve seen in PS ;) )

Any progress on this? I think it would be a very valuable resource to give players an idea of the style of names for each race and then let them use their imagination. If many players do this, it may become possible to tell what race a player is just by looking at their name, which would certainly be realistic.

Name generators are already implemented in CB, I believe.

I totally, 100%-ly agree to this.
IMO there should be
1) a list of about 20 example names for each race and gender on the settings page, so that ppl. will get a feeling for the race while reading about it, because this can severely affect the choice later on and
2) a race and gender-specific random name generator in the creation (and maybe independantly to \"just check it out\".

I usually read the settings and descriptions, then look at the example names, then use the name generator several times, and afterwards merge the ideas I found into a name of my creation, unless the randomiser came up with something that I like instantly. It has worked quite well for me.

i dont know why you guys are talking about this. Why should PS use name generators as well??

i mean, there have been several other topics about names, and in those combined there are about 20-30 sites with name generators.
so dont tell me there are no good names between those.

If you want to have a klyros or so name, try using a engine that doesnt say middle earth or dwarf or elf etc, but something like draconia or dragon or serpent.

use your common sence and you will have no trouble getting a verry good fantasy name that isnt used yet. to prove, here is a list of random names i found with 1 minute:

Risokasy Hidunysu Kybegula Sepefobi Tetyl
Cadida Labelytu Palijew Lasar Vopotoha Marocum
Gikewi Nutire Nyfoduw Diyoj Lixelase Satohado

dont dare telling me there aint a name between you dont like.and this was verry simple:

google.com
 use \"fantasy name generator\"
select first site: http://rinkworks.com/namegen/

about 25 kinds of names to be generated here, each generating a list of about 50 i think.

The next version of planeshift should have support fer Last Names. That would be cool, so people could have their favorite first/and/or/last name without having to worry about someone taking it.

Names that have curse words, have numbers, are just  plain stupid, are abunch of words, and are plain scribbles should not be allowed.

Not Allowed,

JoJoPS2

JjjjjjjjjJ
WEIRDoKILL

Allowed,

The next release of Planeshift DOES in fact support last names. Non-fantasy/roleplay names will not be permitted.

Last names are infact mandatory at this stage. It may change before CB goes public, but that\'s how it is atm.

There is a random name generator which chooses both a first and last name if you\'re not creative enough to think of your own. :) That doesn\'t mean you can\'t use a generator off the web, if you want to.
