Final Fantasy XII
« on: February 07, 2007, 11:44:02 pm »
European Release Date: 23rd February. I have it marked on my calendar :P

I was just wondering, for those of you who've actually played it, what did you think?

Despite it being my second most-wanted game for the past few years (MGS4 being first), I'm a little apprehensive about the new battle system, and the seemingly more mundane story (about politics rather than uber bad guys trying to destroy the world)...

For what Ive heard about it: its huge, BUT: very untypical for sqaure/square enix, the story and the characters havent been worked out like usual, "superficial" was the word, that was used in relation to both, charater and story telling. But since I havent played it yet, I cannot judge by comparing it to the prequels. but what I can say for sure, is that I LOVED the combat system, like it was before. I dont know why they changed it, since it worked out GREAT, and Final Fantasy always stood for it, IMO. And you cant say, a change was neccessary, for to attract more gamers for the game, because it was one of the, if not THE most played and known "japano-RPG" ever [the Dragon Quest series is the other, very successful one] I am very interested to know, how I will get along with the new one, but call me stubborn or not, i KNOW, that i will still like the old one better, since i played Star Wars: Knights of the old republic 1&2, which had a combat system, very similar to the new FF one.
However, i personally think, that FF7 and FF9 were the best, not far ahead to FF8 [fantastic card-minigame]. FFX was a little disappointing, compared to the direct prequels, and to FFX-2 i better wont loose a word. In relation to those last 2, I am sure, that FFXII will be alot more developed in the point of being part of an open, but closed in itself, very big and wonderful world, ready to explore and to look for sidequests and minigames en masse. The story part should be done within 50-60 hours of playing, as they say, but apart from that, the whole game should entertain you for 150+ hours and I cant wait for the release.  :)

I hope, although i havent played it, my post wasnt unwanted here. Im sure, there will be others to post, what experience they already made with the game, but since Im a fan of FF, i just HAD to say something about it.  :D

PS: the games-mag i read, gave 91%

I've started it but not gotten too far into it.  The only reason for this is that the newest console system in my house is an NES (yes, Neko, I do have and have finished FF1), and i've been playing XII at a friend's house.  IMO, part of the beauty of Final Fantasy is that the combat and progression systems change every game.  Yes, it's different.  Yes, it's enjoyable.
So far, the characters and plot haven't grabbed me much, like they have in every other FF game i've played, (well, FF1 kinda sucks character development-wise--that white mage is pretty two dimensional), but i'm sure it's just a matter of time.  Like all things FF, the more I play it, the more I'll get into it.
For the record: I loved FFX.  It was dark and complex and the characters were well developed.  The plot twist at the end was even better than the one at the end of FF7.

EDIT: typos

:whistling: I dunno much about FF but I played 7 for awhile but that time my PC was to slow so after a week or so i quited, BUT id i recall correctly wasn't FFXI an online version? So what's FXII gonna be a off or online? and if it's an online game, i 'By Laanx' hope it's not gonna be a monthly pay off thingie.
And I hope the screen shots I saw were just crappy quality cause from those i saw it looked like Legacy of Kain Defiance visuals.
But I'll see, what it brings, if I'm lucky and i work a little more ma6ybe I can have it by may ^^ cause I have to save money for Pink pop [ :O MUSE IS COMING]

FFXII is offline, single-player, and supposedly has the best graphics of the series yet.
FFXI is the only Final Fantasy I've never played, primarily 'cause I'm morally opposed to paying for a game more than once :P

And you should really pick up Final Fantasy 7 again - it's considered one of the best games in the world.
Same with you Neko, FF1 is a brutal representation of what Final Fantasy is...

And FFX was great, though I admit the gameplay was a little too linear, and a little too lacking in subquests...
(And I don't even count FFX-2 as a final fantasy. The whole point of that game was to ogle the hot chicks :P  And DOA already dominates that market...)

Even better then Oblivion? I love the graphs, I can see endlessly (of course when it's not foggy :P)

:'( I just hate it when cool games come out and ask for a monthly fee, I'm not willing to give up that much money for 1-3 (sundays mostly a bit more :P) play time in evenings. as far as i know WoW asks 12.5 (euro's) a month, that's like 150 euro's a year + the game it self so Around 200 (without expansion) for 1 year and the game.... 200!!! there for you can get all the guildwars, and Oblivion which both you can play for ever free! So as they say live is about compensating.
So  \\o// no monthly fee then, then It's still on my shopping list :P

And you should really pick up Final Fantasy 7 again - it's considered one of the best games in the world.
:-\ I don't think I can do that, I'm busy with Oblivion, GW andeven more Planeshift ^^ and we got us a new update  and don't have that much time to play...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! this forum get's me distracted from my homework, not that I mind  ;) but some do :P

Anyways, I'm always looking forward to such games you can play when you're bored, but also have a nice storyline so you don't feel totaly useless with playing a game which is just about the highscore  O--)

So if it is a final fantasy why isn't it finished yet? I'm just saying that the name is a little silly.

xD I think it's a looooooooong 'final fantasy' cause this would be part 12, like in a race!you're in the final lap but but the race is still going on :P  and the name of a game doesn't always have to be a good one, it's about the 'inside' that counts.
And there are lot's of games with names you can say it's a pretty silly name  ;)

"Edit: i just keep Final spelling like Finale.... :-\"

Actually, I'm pretty sure 'Final Fantasy' refers to the fact that every single game 'finishes', and in the process the player breaks the vicious cycle of tyranny which is going on. Every single game is completely different from the last, usually in both story, setting and mechanics, which means that everything is resolved by the end.

What no reports of eternal Tanelorn for you the eternal Champion to retire to when you have saved the day? How disappointing. I can't recall if I have ever played any of the versions, I get it confused with the nintendo series about Link one of which had something to do with a potato flute (Ocarina of Time). FF isn't really the same is it?
