Though not intended as a description of forum trolls, there are a lot of parallels.  The link goes through descriptions of each 'tactic'.

1)  Grow hair out super long
2)  Get it to stick straight up.
3)  Change it's color to bright orange, pink, or green.
4)  Shrink self
5)  Enlarge head to equal the size of the rest of your body

Method 1

1 - Look for examples of Godwins Law
2 - Call the one that let a thread reach Godwins Law as an idiot or as a stupid
3 - Try to keep the thread alive by posting pointless flamebaits towards the one who mentioned the "forbidden" word, hoping this individual won't ignore your bait.
4 - Repeat this until a moderator locks the thread

Method 2

1 - Simply call someone as idiot or stupid hoping this person will be baited by your flame.
2 - Repeat until a moderator locks the thread.

Do the Bilbous procedures, but also:

5) Put a bait on the hook and use a lighter to ignite a flame on it.

You just made a flamebait. Now just throw it on the water and you will start a flame war, of course the flames will quickly loose the war against the water...

from wordnet

troll
     n 1: (Scandanavian folklore) a supernatural creature (either a
dwarf or a giant) that is supposed to live in caves or
          in the mountains
2: a partsong in which voices follow each other; one voice
starts and others join in one after another until all are
        singing different parts of the song at the same time;
"they enjoyed singing rounds" [syn: round]
3: a fisherman's lure that is used in trolling; "he used a
        spinner as his troll"
4: angling by drawing a baited line through the water [syn: trolling]
     v 1: circulate, move around
2: cause to move round and round; "The child trolled her hoop"
3: sing the parts of (a round) in succession
4: angle with a hook and line drawn through the water
5: sing loudly and without inhibition
6: praise or celebrate in song; "All tongues shall troll you"
7: speak or recite rapidly or in a rolling voice

This however is more what the op is talking about:
troll

An electronic mail message, Usenet posting or other
(electronic) communication which is intentionally incorrect,
but not overtly controversial (compare flame bait), or the
act of sending such a message.  Trolling aims to elicit an
emotional reaction from those with a hair-trigger on the reply
key.  A really subtle troll makes some people lose their
        minds.

      "The Free On-line Dictionary
of Computing, http://www.foldoc.org/, Editor Denis Howe"  (1994-10-17)

He seems to prefer a wider definition than is strictly accurate, more in line with flame-bait. A matter of interpretation, no doubt, that doesn't unduly concern me.

No lr, I just made a just made a poor attempt at humor.

But a better phrase would be "He used a flamebait as he's troll"

Ah, good.  Because I was about to label it as a poor attempt at trolling.:)

Speaking about someone else in the 3rd person with an air of superiority, ignoring the content of his post while fixating on irrelevant semantics and ignoring the context of the words you pick on.  I see that kind of thing as trolling.

Ooh... maybe I can finally link to this :]
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Godzilla and Bliss Ninny were funny.

This reminded me of Karyuu for some reason... :->

Type in 1337 speak. All in capitals. make little sense.  be pointless.
Post alot of random images in a chain line. Porn or gore depending on your preferance. Find a site.  Put  the above into action.
make everybody luagh (or maybe its just me that has a fondness of some trolls...) and get banned.

Everyone has a different definition for a 'troll'.

Personally this is the first I've heard of the word in this context. I thought they were big green fellas with clubs.

Or axes. "Whoja wanna kill?" *snicker*
