Questions on the 5 parts of MB
« on: March 08, 2003, 04:48:56 am »
I just got home and I cant get to the good computer.
I read on there that there are 5 parts, then something that sort of acts as a compilization thing (sorry im tired) and it puts it all together.

Is that relatively simple? or has someone made all of those into 1 big .exe or something... I saw Franc6o i think made a post, but his link was dead, or i couldnt access it.

It\'s easy - just download all 5, plus the .bat file.  Run the .bat file and one big file will be created.

why use this kind of packages btw. instead of a much easier .exe file that just installs the game ? I really don\'t get it.

The reason is that the entire download is 90Megs. And not everybody can do such huge downloads in one go. That\'s why the distribution was split in parts to make downloading easier.

Why not offer the entire .exe file in addition to the parts, to ease downloading for people with fast connections ?

Thought id say nothing but i dont particulary care, so Ill say it anyway, from what ive seen (I cant be assed downloading the download, im on 56k dial up so sue me) I got a few people in Fan PS mirc channel to dcc me some of the textures and texture files from the MB download to confirm a sudden suspicion i got teh moment i saw the size of the download, From what i saw was (while all the chaff was trimmed off the textures which was good) is none of the ones i looked at had been compressed to 256 colors, which was an idea (not exactly brain science) i persoanly put forward to the devs in the dev channel a few months ago (along with the chaff removing) which reduces all of teh png textures by some large degrees, which at that time was a niggle i had with the old AB demo, mainly textures and there file sizes.

i was told by the programmers that the textures are made into 32bit textures anyway by teh engine (which is odd seeing as engines such as teh unreal engine quake3 and many others and so forth all have options to have either 16 or 32 bit (of which there is little noticable differance, you do get some banding and color wash on large gradiated textures) being used ingame, albeit according to the PS programmers i talked to \"there all 32bit in the renderer anyway\"), however seeing as this idea was (im still ony assuming here rather negativly i guess) not taken to heart or forgotten, or deemed second rate, as such you now have a large download on your hands, granted not all of that size is due to textures, although the old AB was made up of a fair chunk of Textures, and light map thingies (which i remeber where being worked on to reduce, did that ever get resolved?), even so Im assuming with increased content that much of the current demos download size being greatly contributed to due to textures...

Im not angry, no, just saddened at the apparent lack of acceptance or interest (my compression idea got a \"good idea, well keep it in mind\" responce) of ideas put forward time and again by certain current members and ex-members that would greatly enrich and/or improve what im sure will eventualy be a great game.

Ill leave you to your cumbersome downloads, I have things to do and art work to draw. Flame away if you have to my asbestos clad rear end is ready.

Bigfoot, your theory about the textures simply isn\'t correct.  This is why your idea was never \'taken to heart\'.

The conversion of 32 or 16bit textures to 256 will reduce the texture quality ingame by 100x.
It will result in a smaller file and all but at the cost of graphics that are on par with the old doom games.
256 color graphics in todays standards is outdated. We are talking nintendo / doom style graphics here.

Lol thomasOliver

Best you actualy know what your talking about before spouting off.

Get a programme like Photoshop and learn how to use it like i do, and you\'ll realise just how laughable your comment was.

Quake by the way is 8bit graphic, which is a fixed 256 pallette for all textures, 16bit graphic games how ever like Unreal (the first one) are  individual 256 pallettes per each texture, basicly the texture file has its own indexed color pallette, so color is unlimited but the textures, images and so forth are compressed, 32bit is basicly unlimited, no pallette, eah pixel in teh texture has its own 3 numeral RGB value stored in teh file(hence a .bmp\'s large file size, other file types like .TGA also contain a alpha channel i think tga\'s are basicly a 24 bit image with alpha(which makes up the other 8bits since a alpha is a grey scale ie 256 color ie 8bit channel), not overly sure on that one)

I just have one question about your posts here bigfoot... I  have noticed other people on forums who do the same thing alot. What is with people typing \'teh\' instead of the correct way \'the\' ? Is it now the cool thing to make typos on purpose? I have never understood... you could say that it is just a typo, but when it happens almost every time you put \'teh\' and not on alot of other words, it kind of rules that out. Not arguing here about proper english or anything, I\'m just curious about this one thing that I have been noticing...

Its just a personal Typo ^_^ fast fingers make for lots of mistakes.

ive been gotten at by a few people for it on 2 old oldschool console RPG development chat channels i frequent alot, when i enter im (if the few who do it are on) hailed with lots of \"Teh\'s\" or \"Teh Keybroad~\".

i type fast and tend to make spelling mistakes, my fingers have become trained to the sequence of \"teh\" rather than \"the\".

If you ever see the term \"Teh Keybroad~\" quoted anywhere it was started by a typo of mine in #Vergesource about a year ago, after getting into a heated argument with a rather abrassive person on there who shall remain namless even though no one here knows them. hasnt gotten off the ground as much as all your bases belong to us, but give it time.  :P

nothing cool or hip about bad spelling, although im not illiterate... just lax in correcting :] , must admit alot of \"teh\" have poped up in the last year, and before that i was pretty much the only one that did it... have i started a craze or has society collapsed as far as typing skills go ^^

Okay, I was just curious because of that fact that I\'ve actually seen it other places besides here. It\'s too bad you don\'t have the reason for it. Still makes me wonder sometimes.
