Hello, I'm new here
« on: February 12, 2007, 03:51:19 am »
Well, Planeshift looks like a sweet mmorpg, I just discovered it, and I am still downloading the client. I've created my account and can't wait to try it out.

I spent over a year with world of warcraft, and frankly, screw fees forever.

Thus I have resorted to the open source community to satisfy my online role playing thirst. I hope I'm welcome!  :sweatdrop:

Hello there,

You may also want to take a gander at these threads here:  http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?board=53.0

Good info in there.

Also, you could read up on the history and setting of PS off of the main site to familiarize yourself with how you shold be acting in game.

Have fun :)

Don't put that link or they will get you! If not them, then the others!

And welcome to the jungle!

Also important to notice is that the fact it's free is not the only difference. Unlike WOW, PS is strongly focused on roleplay.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I just tried the game, however, I have a minor problem. It's very jumpy and choppy.

Specs here are gefoce 6800 ultra 256mb

1Gb Ram, and p4 3.0 GHZ.

The resolution is at 1024x768 (which isn't high) and i have enabled some of the other options like anisotropic filtering and antialiasing.

Why does the game chug like a steam engine?

What does vertex buffer do when applied to object or whatever? I enabled it. Maybe that slowed the game down?

Sounds like you do not have OpenGL support, are you using Windows, Linux or something else?

I am running windows xp with latest motherboard, soundcard and video card drivers. I guess I'm just picky, I'm used to silky smooth fps with no hiccups, and this game like many mmorpgs tends to chug in places I assume? It could be the ram, I know that world of warcraft is almost unplayable with 512mb of ram, and even at 1gb it chugs when entering a new place.

This game seems to recommend 1GB of ram, so that could be the culprit. I'm not a fan of RAM-hogs.

But that's ok.

So why are you using Windows?  ;) On a more serious note, I have an onboard GeF4 using some of my gig of ram and I do not have problems that cannot be accounted for by network traffic. The server is in Singapore so that might be why it is not terribly smooth. Chugging like a steam engine does not sound like that though. I haven't run the windows client recently though.

Welcome to Planeshift!

I play with windows and have a similar computer to yours.  I even play with a higher resolution, but I haven't had any problems at all.  Perhaps it is because before I was used to playing with a computer that couldn't handle the majority of games.  Well if you are having problems with the map loads you might want to change that in the setup.  If you loads all the maps at once it uses a lot more ram.  I also have 1gb and it works fine if I do load all of the maps at once.
