...meaningless chatter and gossip...

Forgive me if I am wrong, isnt that what this WHOLE section on the Planeshift forum is for? Meaningless chatter and gossip about anything non-ps related?

Apparently not. At least not with Kay and Nek around... :P

It has to be constructive and inflammatory and inoffensive and other non-sense like that...

You're allowed to disagree with people and say things that make people think.  Just don't be an idiot or say anything overtly insulting and unconstructive.

Now, it's more than possible to get away with snide sideways insults that leave you room to deny your actions, but that's a different matter.

Yeah, or you can not follow Zanzi's advice, and then you'll be cool :P

MySpace is actually a really useful website for keeping in contact with people that you normally wouldn't have a chance to speak to very often.

I made a lot of friends when I was in the military, and when I was discharged I made the stupid mistake of moving to the black hole of the universe, North Platte, Nebraska.  There were a lot of people that I lost contact with and really didn't have a way of tracking down.  About 5 months ago I got an account so I could keep in contact with my brother, who had just been deployed to the middle east.  He worked pretty nasty shifts over there and at least with myspace he could post messages to his friends and news on his life (as long as it wasn't work related).

Within a few days of creating the account I had a bunch people look me up.  Some of these people I hadn't seen in many years.  I found a couple of old comrades from my tech school in Monterey California that I now chat with on a pretty regular basis. We reminisce about old times and post bulletins and such about stuff related to our old jobs that our little clique might find interesting.  Here are some examples of some of the people I keep in contact with:

- 6 old friends from high school, one that now lives in San Diego, one that lives here in N.P. but almost never has any time to go out (single working mother with 3 kids will do that to you)
- 2 old friends from tech school, one living in Vegas, one in Okinawa.  I didn't even realize that I went to high school with the one in Vegas until she pointed it out on my profile.  I partied with this chick at Ft. Ord quite a few times and never made the connection until I was out of the service.
- 6 old buddies from when I was stationed overseas in Asia.
- 11 relatives, half of which don't live anywhere near me, that I normally wouldn't remember to call or stay in touch with
- 1 person from PS that is interesting to chat with when I get the time
- a few others that I have met that we usually use MySpace to coordinate places to meet for get-togethers and such.

I do agree that meeting in person is much preferable to chatting online with some pictoral avatar and cute little phrases and jokes, but around here, the only entertainment venues for persons between 21 and 35 are bars and more bars.  During the 3 short months of summer we all go to the lake and raise hell, but this enables us to stay in contact with our friends, even when we are all in winter hibernation mode.

Right... coolness on an internet message forum...

I mean 'cool' as in 'we're cool', or 'I'm cool with that'.

Not cool as in what I am the epitome of...

MySpace is actually a really useful website for keeping in contact with people that you normally wouldn't have a chance to speak to very often.

I was actually going to say something along those same lines, but then... I didn't.  I do use myspace for keeping in contact with out-of-state cousins and friends, and people I like but never get a chance to talk to anymore.  You may be thinking, "...e-mail?!", but the message interface is a lot more inviting on myspace, and there's no spam, PLUS there are reasons to go there besides just the messages, so people check and respond more often.

All in all, it's realli the other people that ruin myspace, what with the self-centeredness and the conceited arrogance and the obnoxious little bulletins that say "I gotz new pictures!  Comment and I'll lovez youz forEvErz!!" but in fact, when you reply honestly and tell the person that they're nothing more than an ignorant, self-concerning, low-life prick for whom it's realli a damned miracle to see them pull away from the mirror every morning, they let fly an emotion quite different from love.

Everbody keeps telling me I realli gotta stop saying stuff like that to people.  :P

Oh. Oh, I like you.

I got pressured into a myspace account for the sole reason of checking on friends. The whole thing feels really bloated and ugly, so I had to clean things up.

The only reason I have been to MySpace was to check out a documentery my buddy filmed. It showcases a local music teacher and his students who form Evolutionary. The teacher is the first ever to win a Juno for teacher of the year.

You can use the email to keep in touch with your cousins who are on the Moon. You don't need Myspace. Like you don't need a personal page to say "ohh look how trendy I am!". Because you do need to continue that line with "...ohh, but I really need to go out, to meet real people, and actually have fun, 'cause it sux to see time running like hell from me".

Being serious, websites like this one really do the opposite than the idea their built on. And that means they create distances between persons, they make a "separate" virtual world. C'mon. Like on hi5, where you're crazy, "Oh I need more fives! Please comment on my pictures, please please please!". For that kind of people, I have a phrase which comes from deep deep in my heart: Get a life.

I was on hi5, and I do know what kind of people "hangs out there". It's a damn way of life, get real.

It's just a tool.  What matters is how you use it, and different people use it different ways.
