Hello. Have a question
« on: February 17, 2007, 07:42:07 pm »
Hello :). I just recently started playing Plane shift again and I'm playing as a Kran. I used to role play a lot on my old dwarf character. I'm just wondering if you guys have any tips on role playing with a Kran. This is my first time playing as a Kran and Im really stumped in terms of my description, what I eat, what I drink etc... Just wondering if anyone has any pointers for role playing as one.

-thanks
 :)

Remember that Krans do not have a gender. That's the important one.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

I've seen it done a lot of different ways.  There was one kran character who professed to be 600 years old.  Other kran characters just act like they're unintelligent to the point of being unable to form proper sentences.  I'd like to see a few kran poets and philosophers though, I'm sure they'd have an interesting way of looking at things.

How do Krans...reproduce? I mean, it's near impossible, simply put. They're ROCKS. And plus, the spell Talad casted isn't exactly repeatidly being cast, so new Krans couldn't be born in that same way. I don't really understand how Krans would exist anymore, since I'm sure the "age of the Gods" ended a long time ago in ingame time.

They reproduce by gemmation, for which the definition is : "asexual reproduction in which a local growth on the surface or in the body of the parent becomes a separate individual".

Quote
To further on Kran reproduction, how long does the "gemmation" process take for Krans? Is it irregular to see Krans walking around with a face or leg sticking out of their back or belly? And do the Krans feel any pain or go into a 'hibernation' for this process?

The process takes about 10 days, where in the first 8 days their body becomes a lot heavier, about 20 more kilograms, distributed all over the
body (mainly on the torso). In this period they can walk around, even if with some additional effort and there is no visual difference. In the last 2 days, the kran goes in a very quiet place, usually away from other krans, and the real gemmation process starts. It's not painful, but it requires some concentration. The additional weight gained has all the needed parts of a new kran, in very simple form. The front part of the torso becomes more soft and the new born kran is slowly formed coming out of the torso. Kran are used to keep both arms on their torso to gently support the formation of the new child. They usually do not sleep during the two days, but it's possible that they fall asleep for short periods. After giving birth, it's better to rest for 1 day, and protect the torso with clothes, because it has to regain hardness. The new kran is also quite soft and will be able to stand on his feet after about 10 additional days.

A curiousity and doubt arose about Krans:
What are the reasons(biological and/or cultural) for Krans being usually dim-witted?

Are their brains smaller or less evolved than of the other races?

Is it due to their sedentary lifestyle or due to their culture?

I've played a few kran in my time in plane shift, Mainly i've found Kran to be a relaxed race, not a jumpy enki or anything, from pacifists, to warriors Kran can be both. But then again most races can, its just kran work excellent in both fields. Most kran don't wear much armor, but if you do, then have that in your description, most of my character's descrptions are mainly about their armor, weapons. As a description is not a short history of your character, nor is it where you'ed talk about your personality, its just what a person would see at first glance, the  other information like history, personality, well people learn about that through role playing with your character.

Kran do not have to be dumb, or have a speech problem, contrary to the steryotypical kran. Like zanzibar said, they could be poets or philosophers, even alchemists. You should first start by brainstorming "How did my character come to be? what was his/her younger years like?" This will help you get an idea of how the character's personality should be. Perhaps at one point your character served some time as a soldier, in which case he would be disciplened, aggressive and serious. Or a scholar, wise,  and intelligent.

Really there is no end to what a kran's personality could be, or how one should be played.

2: I need a holy script
3: About holy script
4: About holy book
5: Sharven's holy script
6: Sharven wants a holy script
7: Im here for sharven

You're missing one more descriptive word. It's a "_____ holy script of Laanx." _____ because you're looking for it ;)

*edit*

Also remember that "Give me [item]" and "I need [item]" are good ways to steal from NPCs :P

As can be seen by the starting stats, an average Kran is more intelligent than an average Enkidukai (yet I've until now seen only one Enki who wasn't bright), and overall not significantly less intelligent than most other species, on average.
Granted, the description says they're "not the most intelligent race", but that necessarily applies to almost all races if taken literally. IMO it merely tries to say that they may be a little slower (not dumber) than other races, possibly due to the way their brain works, or possibly because it didn't evolve to work as fast, since the body moves slower as well. This certainly is a small difference, though. All in all I don't think Kran are less intellectually capable than others, it might only take slightly longer.

Ugh, so that's why I never got that thing. I may be looking for it, but I know that the guy has (or claims to have) it, so obviously I'm asking for the holy scripture (and unless they specialise in holy scriptures this should define things pretty well)...

Edit: spelling

In all fairness though, enkis tend to say weird things midsentence like "SHINY!" or "OH LOOK A BUTTERFLY!"

Most Krans I've come across seem to be slow-moving, slow-talking thinkers with almost infinite patience.

The fact that their body (and lips) are more cumbersome mean they have more time to think and less time to rush around or talk incessantly, which would probably make them fairly wise (if not intelligent...). Personally I would be inclined to consider them the wisest race (maybe not intelligent, but knowledgeable of the ways of the world and people in it). I dunno how that fits into the settings though...
