Charisma Bar
« on: February 23, 2007, 05:17:36 am »
Okay short simple idea for the use of Charisma

Everyone starts with a bar called charisma, this could be next to the magic power bar or something like that. if you have low charisma, its small, if you have high charisma its big.

The point?

Charisma is the way you are precieved by others... However so far in ps it just makes you look stronger, How about this?

Lowering the bar makes you appear weaker! Why is that good? Well in some cases you may not want your enemies to know your true power, that way they might underestimate you.

However, if you want to go back and put the fear of god into someone, you can bring it to the very highest.

The counter? Intelligence, higher intelligence for whoever is evaluating you means that they are more likely to know about where you stand strength wise.

Didn't want to make a big ol' paragraph as I saw little point, so.... What does everyone think?

How does this work in terms of RP?
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

You puff out your chest, you seem strong, like a soldier, your expression seems stern you seem tough

To seem weak you make yourself look scared, and vunerable... In essence your use of the charisma bar would be the equivilant to your character acting.

to make yourself look strong =  >:(

to make yourself look weaker = :(

does this make sense? :/

IE: Someone comes by you want to fool them so they'll rush into a duel, as they're your sworne enemy yadda yadda whatever...

To describe this in a rp sense, your person might slow their breathing, slump their shoulders, droop their eyebrows, frown a bit... let their gut hang out a bit... Now, do they really look like a challenge?

However to look tough they can grimace, grit their teeth, puff out their chest tense their arms up. Stand upright, furrow their eyebrows...

Get it?

Hmm... I see this as a skill, rather than a bar.  Somthing you could learn and become better at over tme, as it involves fooling people, and some arnt so easily fooled by a  snarl and a sword.

I think when people evaluate you,  their intelligence gives them an estimate, depending on how intelligent they are. You could learn to decieve people into thinking you are weak, or strong. Your deceptiuon skill would be matched against  a persons intelligence or wisdom, and if they are wise they will see tyhrough your charade. A fool will follw your  string and give you your desired result.

So you could have some options, "appear strong" Appear weak" And possibly somthing else.  This show up in your evaluation window.
Example:

If your deception works the person see's

"(name) Looks strong and experianced"  Or whatever it is that  evaluation gives.

If It doesnt work and a person see's past your deception they would get:

"(Name) looks strong and experianced... But you dont really believe this."

Right however if its just a skill (as charisma is now) then you can't make yourself appear weaker.

You can. But ut its not directly accessed by changing your charisma levels like a bar would. its done by choosing options, rather than adjusting a bar.

A good idea. I would call it an acting type skill, where your character can act stronger or weaker than they really are. The better your character is at this skill, the further off true center you could move your perceivable charisma. This could be used in talking to some NPCs (in the far -far- future), or dealing with creatures. You would want to look weak when trying to get close to a skittish animal, but want to look strong when finding an aggressive one in your path. The same with different NPC personalities. Sometimes you would want to come off as submissive, other times dominating.

All in all, a very good idea for changing how those around you perceive you, and much more useful for RP than a magic power bar.

Charisma itself could be the skill that sets how much you can change this, as there is no way a person of low charisma can make it seem if they have high. Intelligence would be the counter to this, as it is easy to see if someone is all bluster or not.

Charisma influences how likable you are not how powerful you appear. Highly charismatic people can draw you into their mindset and thus get you to believe what they want (mostly abstract things). I do not see how it has anything to do with appearances of strength or weakness. Indeed a highly charismatic person can make you like them as they metaphorically stick the knife between your ribs.

in response to: 'Charisma influences how likable you are not how powerful you appear.'

well actually in game it does.

And It takes some charisma to be able to act, and have people truely believe that what you're doing isn't acting. Charisma is also being able to fool people, decieve, etc etc.

Thus by Body language, one could decieve another into believing they have a limp, or fake being injured, and make it believeable, on the other hand they could fake being tough, or stronger then they really are

Some nature examples on earth: Certian Owls will Puff themselves up when they feel threatened! This makes them look bigger, and tougher, so others will leave them alone

However there are rodants and lizards that fake being dead to drive predators away.

Both are examples of using Charisma and body language to decieve others into thinking you're stronger then you really are, or dead, However instead of dead in PS it would be just making yourself look like a wimp.

It may be that it does in the game, I have no knowledge of that but if it does then it is fudging the definition

Holdan, I'm disapointed in you after the show you put on for me earlier.  I simply don't see how this could possibly work with Planeshift's roleplay-culture.
