Grpahics cards port

Hey im in the market for a video card. currently the thing im usin is a peice of junk (cos its not a real graphics card)
and i was wondering what sort of video cards i could install with this port.

I would suggest that you look up AGP graphics on places like savastore and see what you find...  but I would recommend a new motherboard package too... so  you can make use of PCI...  It all depends on your budget.

As you say your budget is small... I would recommend you set your budget perameters on the search and look at places like EBAY for what is out there, and go for the best for your budget...  it also depends on the motherboard you are running on and its CPU (amd or Pentium..etc) as to whether you go for a Nvidia or other chipset in your GPU...  Nvidia are better with AMD as a general rule.

it also has a slot at the back of the computer thats 12cms high if that helps

What type of motherboard [MB] do you have? make model?  etc...  you could then look at places like savastore where they give compatibility charts for products.. [so long as the MB you have is not now obsolete?]

I don't understand the 12cm thing you are on about.. AGP slot is an AGP slot..... the holes in the casing are for the connector part of the card... or fans...  or ventilation...

Thanks. the 12Cm thing is just the hole in the case thought it might help. meh ill just ask mi friends dad tomorrow.

The 12 cm hole is probably where any ports poke out of the back of cards. Otherwise if you needed something not already built into your motherboard (like a network card, or a graphics card on really ancient computers), you wouldn't have anywhere to plug for example, the monitor in.

They're all about the same size, that shouldn't present a compatibility issue.

In this post I explained some of the changes to graphics socket types. Have a look at that and it should explain some things.

As for finding out what your computer can take, the only real way to know what it can take is by getting the make and model of your motherboard, this is normally written on the board, usually at one of the edges or betweer 2 of the PCI slots. just open your case and have a quick look. You will also find the make and model in your motherboard manual.

The most reliable information will come from the motherboard manufacturers website if the mb is not too old. Some of these sites are a little tricky to navigate but for the most part you want to be looking in the support section. Some have separate sections for older hardware and nothing in the support for things much more than 5 years old. Also if you still have the manual it should tell you what kind of AGP support the board offers. I think most AGP cards are backwards compatible but that may not be the case. At any rate an 8x agp card's performance would degrade in an older port even if it was backwardly compatible.

those brackets meant to be circles around the letters the 01 im guessin means it was made in 01. is that too old lol
i can play most games fine atm

Edit: lol i was in there with a torch decided to shine it on the port (go figure) and wella it says AGP on the side

there's still some newer agp cards out there, i should know i have 1 of them a msi 7800gs agp 256mb works nicelly... for the most time

That would be that particular component, it appears to be the built-in audio/video chip (cursory google search.) You are looking for something printed on the substrate, the (usually green board) thing to which everything else is attached

Hmmm my computer is pretty tightly packed (its miniature) will this be a number? a name? will it be put on with a sticker? or printed on?
EDIT: ok i found this i looked up LOTES which is the company name on the side of the slot and this seems to look like what ive got

Again that would be the connector and does not help much. You can usually get the information without opening the box by looking on the bios screen although some put up a splash screen instead. The bios screen is the first thing to be displayed when you boot and will say something like Award Bios, Phoenix Bios, or American Megatrends (AMI) bios or possibly something else. You can usually press the pause/break button to allow you to read this screen. As well as the bios manufacturer and software date it should tell you what MB you have. Mine says ASUS xxxxxx where the x's are the model number I cannot think of at the moment.
