Moderation isn't strict enough.
« on: February 25, 2007, 12:02:19 am »
This forum has gone downhill since I started posting on it almost two years ago.  A "blame the victim" mentality has always been common among the GM team and PS staff, but lately I've seen a lot of people get away with posting things that I would personally suspend their posting privileges for.  Here's a good example:

Quote
Why isn't this in the complaint department with all the other useless whining amongst the useful criticisms?  As for the gist of the thread it appears there is more than enough blame to go for all the participants.

This was posted to a thread where everyone was being polite, constructive, on topic, and helpful.  The post added nothing to the discussion.  It insulted everyone participating in the discussion as a "useless whiner".  It ignored the facts and gave blame to the blameless for the sole purpose of causing trouble.

Not only was this post left untouched, but the complaints about that post were deleted!

I've visited a lot of forums in my time.  Some of those forums were almost completely unmoderated, but those forums didn't have nearly as many problem posters as this forum does.  Other forums were moderated by fascism, where one poorly written post could get your account banned.  Moderators would even edit posts to insult the problem posters.  An example:

Quote
the new duel system sucks ur all idiots

Would be editted to say:

Quote
I don't know how to do a search.

That kind of thing gets people behaving themselves in a hurry.

In summary:

Planeshift, you're losing your forum just as you're losing your game.  The moderators are very well intentioned but unfortunately ineffective at stopping problem posters from doing their thing.  A moderator like AendarCallenlasse might not make friends, but he gets stuff done and he keeps the forums clean.  And why would you want to be friends with trolls?  They eat innocent goats.

As a sidenote:

Yes, I'm one of those problem posters at times, and that's proof that things need to change around here!  I post what's on my mind because I i. Have no investment in the planeshift community and ii.  Have no official relationship with the Planeshift project.  I can turn my behaviour on and off like a lightbulb, and if you're in a fight with me (especially on IRC), it's probably because I'm playing with you.  But don't ignore the problem just because you dislike me personally and I happen to be the one speaking up about it.  If you do, then that makes you a fool.

I don't know.

If it gets too strict there will be more victim-complex threads.
I like the moderating the way it is.  It's relaxed enough to speak your mind yet, strict enough to avoid being an idiot.

As the person that posted that comment I would like to reply somewhat cautiously. Your original post in that thread was presented as the facts of the case when they appeared to merely be your preferred spin on the tale. When I first saw it it was already edited in a manner that appeared to suggest that it was originally slated for deletion i.e. you added your loaded question on the end. By the time i posted my comment it appeared to me to belong in this forum as the title was very close to one Vengence suggested in the forum setup to whit "10 things that really suck about PS" I hope I quoted that accurately I did not go look for it yet again. Your thread already appeared to be against forum policy to me because it was telling tales out of school although I did not challenge that aspect it goes to my motivation. Also as Vengence decided it was yet another KS thread it should have been posted to one of them instead of in a new thread all its own.

So I have dealt with the two sentences you objected to:
Sentence 1 I thought it misplaced, it seemed against the policy and was rehashing old arguements to no real benefit.

Sentence 2 Your posting your synopsis of the event did not make you look good nor did all the defenses make the defenders look good as a neutral third party it really did look like neither side was blameless.

I singled no-one out for special blame for the incident and mere suggested, however poorly worded, that the thread might be more appropriate elsewhere.

Vengence decided the thread was fine here and at my request deleted your comments directed at me. That was not good enough for you so you had to question his decision publicly, also against the forum rules and rephrase your deleted comments at me. I complained about this too and when nothing was done in a timely manner (I could have waited longer and am not blaming the mods) I posted back in a similar manner which prompted K's cooking tips (simmer down).

Just remember complaints about posts go to the mods and not the public. If you complain to the mods and defer to their ruling you will get along much better. I am not the only one you butt heads with, I am just the most obstinate. You are virtually the only one I do not get along with. Does that tell you anything?

It was not about kill stealing - it was about the quality of the playerbase.

You are virtually the only one I do not get along with. Does that tell you anything?

It tells me that other people know better than to engage you in discussion!

I think Karyuu still has a whip around somewhere, we had to sacrifice hundreds of newbies to make her stop using it though.
Maybe it's time go dust if off again then ;)

Say the word.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

The time has come to fight for freedom, land and equality!

That's more important than it sounds, actually.

This forum has gone downhill since I started posting on it almost two years ago.

Maybe that is the problem :P

anyway, i wouldnt say the moderating was lax, just inconsistent. You really dont seem happy here Zanzibar, maybe it is time to move on?

This is exactly the kind of post I would delete if I was a mod.:)  Snide and useless comments which are nothing but flame baits.

The 1st sentance was a joke.

The second was the content.

The 3rd was merely a question.

"May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth as it continues to spin and circle in frigid space with its warm and fragile cargo of animate life."

That's a bit strict, Zanzi.

It was meant as a joke and then a suggestion.  Maybe you should move on.  I'd miss you, personaly.

Either way, how strict the moderation is depends on what you want.  If it was as strict as you seem to want it (I'm assuming here so I could be wrong) then it would be a more mature and debate oriented.

Whereas here we have a more relaxed forum that is mostly here for socializing.
I do agree, though, that the complaint department and wish list should be heavily moderated, along with a few other forums.

Given the posts Idoru has made in the past, I doubt his intentions were harmless.
