Have there been any known "Security Issues" w/ PS?
« on: February 28, 2007, 12:47:05 pm »
Just curious (or is it paranoia? ::|).  Has there been any known security threats while running PlaneShift on XP, or any other system or OS?

I have never heard of anyone raising such concerns. I searched the forums but couldnt find any relevant threads either.

What kind of threat are you concerned?

Playing PS may be dangerous for your comp! no kidding!
I remember that guy who was threatening he will hack my comp if i wont stop killing some teffie. Although he was trying to be very serious, my comp didn't explode at me. But who knows, maybe you won't be that lucky ;P

well tho i never saw such concerns raised on forums, they were raised on torrentspy-- i recall seeing several accusations that ps includes some sort of malware, such accusations stemming from a combination of the ridiculously large numbers of seeders & leechers, and the negative opinions the poster had about the game-- the person was skeptical how such a [pajorative] game could have SOOOO many people dl & seed it...  there's still an example up here:

http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/870038/PlaneShift_Crystal_Blue_0_3_016

I never heard anything to support the claim... there are currently about 350,030 accounts & ver 0.3.017 had 40, 713 seeders when torrentspy last checked in november...lets just pretend ps has existed exacty 7 years & each year has has an equal number of accounts made.. that boils down to about 50k accounts per year, so it's reasonable to believe a version would be fully downloaded & then seeded by a good 40k... Just my own guesstimations...

i remember reading a post in a forum, but i don't think it was this one, although you are welcome to check! the post i remeber was titled "the rats are hackers", which is a strange title! the writer of the post mentioned a particular type of error message that they received when ps locked up on them. They obviously knew more about computers than myself, because they seemed to understand the error message and they were showing a lot of concern and sent a copy to the ps team. They mentioned they were in the sewers at the time and i got the impression from what they said, s well as the title of their post, that they were avoiding asking the question  "doesn't this error message mean that ps has security issues?" or something of that nature.

I am currently looking for this post and the error message, if i find it i will post it here

There are no known issues with Planeshift that would allow one to take over your pc.
And about that guy who made the "The sewer rats are hackers!" thread:
He was wrong. He thought that he got kicked out of the game and that some malicious file had been uploaded to his pc.
Fact is he simply crashed and that file that got created was simply the crash dump file.
So no worries :)

So, the exact opposite of that then ;)

Twice now on Windows systems that were running gratuitous anti-virus (both Norton) software, I have seen it identity PS as having some kind of malware or trojan inside of it. PS does not have any. This is a fine example of FUD. Antivirus software is incredibly dumb software, it make a lot of assumptions about software it monitors, and often classifies things as threats that are not such at all.

Yup, that's pretty much Norton what you describe up there.
Use Avast! instead, they like pirates.

For those interested: an objective test judges PS to be 100% clean of spyware.

We build each release from scratch from source code.  No pre-made programs are included as part of it.  We are 100% sure there is no malware or spyware of any kind in it.

We post the md5 checksums on the planeshift.it website whenever we make a new download.  If you get the distro from anywhere but the PS site directly, such as TorrentSpy or whatever, you should definitely check the checksum before installing the program.  We cannot guarantee what is on non-sanctioned download sites and have no way of knowing.

If the md5 checksum doesn't match, do not install it.

Someone posted on the forums once about suffering from a "ping attack" from another player.  I'm guessing that it's something similar to launching a denial of service attack on a server.  No one was able to confirm his claims though; everything suggests that the guy was out to lunch.

That's the only security thread I can think of.  Planeshift has been completely safe in the time that I've used it.
