56k modem connection...
« on: March 02, 2007, 04:21:44 am »
I've never played plane shift, but it looks great. I meet all system requirements, but my question lies here.  I have a 56k modem and usually get about a 24 kbps connection.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me how well the game plays with a connection like this?  Are there any players out there getting this kind of connection?

Thanks a lot!

In theory, the game should run fine on a dial up connection.  I vaguely recall a few people around here saying they play through a dial up connection.

Your first issue is how to get that 250 meg install file over a dial up connection.  Bit torrent or use of a download manager will probably be your best bet.

Tried it when DSL was down. Pings are a little high but then again, this is a NOT a FPS so its playable (caveat: at least it was for me)

Thanks to Elvicat for spotting the error

moon plays over a dial-up connection, and he was able to keep i think 4 clients open at the same time.

so with one and diak-up you will be fine.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

Wow, I have DSL and I can't even do two. 'Course I think that's more to do with my processing power...

I play on a 56k modem over the summer and a cable connection during schooling seasons.  The only differences i have noticed is the fractions of a second from when a slow connected person sees a monster compared to a fast connection person looking at the same monster.  The faster connection will be able to attack the monster first.  Same goes with the PvP.  the faster person will have that fraction of a second advantage, and will most likely hit you before you can hit them.  Downloading times on a 56k for this game is horrindous though.. i would not advize it.. go to your library and download this game onto a thumb drive is that is the only fast connection you can get.

My thoughts and experiences.
Huh? What was that?

I dunno, '24kbps' should be enough to download a 250mb file in at least less than a day...

Missed this thread when it was active.

Poor connections do work extremely well with PS in My experience. I connect with a peak transfer of 45kbps and have managed to run 2 clients without any issues. My connection also shares that bandwidth for both upload and download so sometimes if things get hectic I have lag issues but nothing major. Pings are generally slightly more than a second. In an FPS i would be dead before I moved but PS is a little more relaxed :)
