Spelling.
« on: March 17, 2007, 07:39:45 pm »
I've noticed that often there are unusual spellings in-game. For example, the other day I picked up both an 'ornated' and an 'opale-encrusted' broadsword. Is there any way we could start checking this sort of thing? Hell, I'd be happy to volunteer if it meant not being suddenly thrown out of the mindset by noticing these incorrections.

I'm sure there are grammatical errors (and maybe spelling) in one or two of the MOTDs too.

But then, I don't think the PS team are all English speakers (by first language at least) so I've never said anything... 'til now. :)

Ornate is used as a verb so ornated is acceptable as as the past tense, but more to the point, -ed is
Quote from: 1966 Funk & Wagnall Standard Dictionary
2. forming adjectives from adjectives in -ate
and so is quite proper as used.
Opale could be opal spelled wrong or it could be some PS specific substance with a similar name, it is hard to be certain.

It is true that there are examples of improper usage in the game as well as mis-spellings in various places. I found one, posted it in the bug-tracker along with a description of where it occurred, what was wrong with it and what it should be. It has since been fixed.

One of the joys of working on Planeshift is meeting people from all over the world.  But I hate the spelling problems also.

I think spelling mistakes should be considered bugs like other content and code errors.  So I am going to suggest that you submit the problems you find to the bug tracker as mention here http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=21381.0

Please take the time to search to make sure the bug has not already been submitted.

This also depends on which English Dictionary your using, American, Canadian, British? Some consistency would be proper I think.

I think I saw someone mention in another thread a while ago that it should be British English for the spellings, but chances are im wrong.

The english to use has not been settled or codified in years of development. I do not think it is of great consequence if you see color or colour in game. Actual spelling mistakes i will fix for you all day just use the bug tracker.

It's not wrong per se.

In UK English the right wording is "colour". But in U.S. English the right wording is "color".

By the way, when will the grammarians come here with their "Webster Dictionaries" hunting for spelling/grammar/etc. errors in every single written word/phrase in the game ?

Do you know what I think?

Nitpicking

There are more important problems to complain and suggest solutions about.

I personally do not mind a mix of spellings as long as it is spelled right for somewhere in the world. I do find improper sentence structure and verb tense more annoying. If you are going to insist on English only in main you really ought to get it right in your game texts. I have posted one such error in the tracker which I am happy to say was fixed but I really should do more. Of course some misspellings and poor grammar can be put down to character quirks but item info boxes should not be that way unless perhaps 'This item is labeled: "apel jus" and appears to contain a golden liquid that smells of apples' where the labeler did not know how to spell.

I think Narure was joking. I hope Narure was joking. Notice the irony present in

This complaint is somewhat troublesome, use the bug tracker.

I am not interested in the ones that are British, Canadian, Australian, or U.S. English.

For all the other errors report them, i dare you, i double dog dare you.
