Lack of RP?
« on: March 21, 2007, 09:13:45 am »
I tried to RP on PS last night, and could find no one interested. Most people were either Idlying, or simply treating the game as a generic MMO. I was saddened.

Try harder. Sometimes it does suck, especially if you happen to be new. But im sure you will find someone who wants to RP with you.

It  happens. TO be honest f you ant to RP all the time you should probably find a text  based Mud like Achaea, there is good RP opportunities in that.
Probably the sole reason I'm going to go back there.

I seem to drop in and out, like Create a character  RP,  adventure get to about level 25 and leave for ages. Character gets deleted, a few months later I start to crave some RP, and i return recreate my character and  have some fun until i get bored. Again.

Welcome to Yliakum and I am sorry to hear you had trouble finding rp some days it can be like that though.
It can also depend on where you were looking, if you char is an enki then it is possible that there wasn't much going on in Oja, the plaza in Hydlaa can either be a good or bad place to start.

A suggestion also remember that as in real life if you just walk up to a group of people and join in you stand the risk of a frosty reception, it is better to stand listening and then if you see a point that fits with your background/story jump in.

I hope you try again and wish you luck

I tried, and everyone was nice, it was just surprising when people were running around saying things such as "LOL"

That is something that irritates me alot aswell. We had a discussion about it on these forums recently.

I understand what your saying in that thread, maybe the game should censor smilies? RP Nazi or not, it is an RP game isnt it?

Its going over old ground already discussed but the filters would filter all the channels and not just the open channel. I personally think people should learn some self control. But as I say, it was pretty much discussed to death before.

Hardly everyone who plays planeshift is an RPer. Most of the players running around are either just concerned about leveling up, questing or are still new to the game and trying to find their way around without RP.

Your best chance to find RP is to either go to the Taverns, hang out at Harnquist's or look for specific guilds/players which you know to be roleplayers from the forums. Even when you do this you're bound to meet a lot of new players and players who're just using PS as a chatroom.

However once in a while you'll stumble on a few roleplayers. I hope you won't give up yet and I'm sure that if you keep trying you'll find quite a few people who are practically always interested in roleplaying.

What Zan said. Plus, if there are Game Masters around be sure to point out to them that there are people that refuse to roleplay. Even if they don't do anything about it, it shows your interest to turn this game into something better.

Sorry to say but this thread smells like a set-up to go over things for the seventy-third time. I role-play every time I talk to strangers in the game. I ask questions about how things work, where things are and whatever all couched in contextual terms. I do not try to seduce fair lady and get married, use flowery language to show what a leet role player I am or get involved with spurious plots somebody thought up because they like to do stuff such as that and they were bored that day. You do not need anyone else to role play you just need to do what makes sense for your character and interact with the environment you have been given. If you choose to have a character for which nothing has yet been implemented then you are not being very pragmatic and have nobody to blame but yourself.

Right. If it is a set up, I'm sure you're part of it since you're posting the same thing you've posted in the other 72 posts. *grins*

Roleplaying with people who don't roleplay can be hard. Impossible even. That's at the base of what this person was saying. If you're fine with having your character finding people that say strange stuff like lmao and rofl, fine. If you think we should have roleplayed in Molecular Blue like we were all miners that picked rubies, emeralds and diamonds that sprung from the floor, fine too, I guess. Just don't expect it to be seen as common sense though.
I agree that players can roleplay, to a level, even without a good quality participation from others. You can take advantage of what is around you and drop it into your own context. However it is normal that people request better interaction from other players, and a better approach to what they think is roleplay.

I know this discussion sounds repetitive, but some people can't use search. And that's what I believe you should tell them if you're really annoyed by these. Not perpetuating a conversation you deem as pointless and recurrent.

I think the original poster was trying to raise valid concerns. And it isnt an alt account of mine :P

Yeah, a search would have been good, but we arent all perfect and people who are new are often less perfect than the rest of us ;)

Well I admit I haven't been in game a great deal lately, I have been in for 3-4 hours in the last 2-3 days and have heard none of this out of context talk. I'm not saying it doesn't go on, just that I haven't heard it. I haven't spent much time standing around Harnie where I would expect to hear more of it--that being newb central. For the most part, it has been hard for me to get anyone to talk to me, at the mines and the forges, which is fine. I guess it really comes down to where you go and what you do. Is the problem more widespread than just newb central or is it really centered there?

I'm actually somewhat surprised. I do a lot of lurking, and it seems to me that we're doing fairly well RP-wise.  Most of the dialogue I hear is IC, not like 2 years ago when it was mostly OOC.

It's a shame that your experience was different and I hope you keep at it.  There are many great RP'ers around, I know this for a fact.  It might be a matter of making yourself known to them--it's all too easy to overlook new characters in the assumption that they won't RP.

About contacting a GM,well, un-notated OOC dialogue is discouraged, but there's no rule against  it unless it's disruptive.  So if someone is OOC and it's disruptive to your RP, and you ask them (nicely!) to stop or leave the general vicinity and they won't, by all means /tell a GM.  We'll help any way we can.
"Here's to lowering caskets of old friends choice and consequence we'll birth a new day with the death of an old and start over, start over.  Here's to burying hatchets in those who you'd never call your friend...we'll birth a new day with the death of an old day and start over, start over!"
