Guild Choice
« on: March 22, 2007, 01:48:24 am »
Something I could not find mentioned here (probably because most people who come to this section are in a guild already) is how to choose a guild...

In my experience with MMORPG's the best method is to choose one with members that are on-line at the same time as you, and who ideals. rules and philosophies on game play fall along side your own, otherwise just go solo...

That's the worst reason to pick a guild. For me i'd choose a guild that suits my character. If I was a "shady" character i'd go for a guild like the Outlaws it all depends what you have in mind for your character. Obviously you want an active guild I won't dispute that, but choosing it so people tend to be online at the same time differs from choosing an active guild and one of the worst reasons i've ever heard to join a guild.  :)

Also guilds post here to promote themselves I suggest reading through them and deciding that way. If you're unsure if that guild is active PM a member.

I can see what you written and know the difference between AND and OR I simply offered my opinion on the first part, as for the second...

So what would your ideals be on how a guild is ran and what sort of RP do you intend to be involved in, "good" character, "shady" character, merchant, blacksmith etc?

Whatever you intend to RP i'm sure there will be a guild to suit you.  :)

How to choose a guild 101:
scroll up to the sticky of the Guild List.
Look through the guild purposes and find one that matches your IG character/his beliefs and goals.
Go to that guild's website to learn more information about them and ask any questions on their forums and talk with a member or two In-Game.

OR

walk around in-game asking random people about their guilds, but you may not find all of the guilds.

***NOTE: Deciding on a guild should not be a 5 minute task.
There are two types of people in this world: The Pinky and the Brain.
Which one are you?

Agreed never should be a 5 minute decision when I play with the intention of guilding (I actually prefer soloing) I usually let it be a 5 week (or more) decision...

Which also gives my chars time to get some exp up so they are more attractive to a guild than "a noob to mold in thier image" like what happens to so many people in other games...

As for the first part, this is my starting point when I eventually decide to join a guild, as these are the guilds who have active members on at the same time as you.

IMO there is no point joining a guild that may be busy when your not on but dead when you are as it gets boring and you may as well just solo the damn character...

*** Also a weirdly interesting side note is that joining the guild of a IRL friend can often lead to IRL problems due to a game go figure but some people just can't tell the diff between RP and RL, sad but true I have quit 2 or three games in the past due to this problem, I guess ppl sometimes need to learn "it just a game!" ***

I took around 2 months to have the final decision of not join any guild with my main character, but instead I founded a new organization.

Although "alignments" aren't appliable, they are a little implicit, although being superficial and may be a basis.

For example, if you for any reason don't like RPing the "lawful", obedient and loyal types, you should avoid "lawful" guilds and so on.

But in the end it is your choice. As said it should primarily fit properly with your character. Think about your character's personality when deciding wheter a guild fits or not with him or her. And as already said, don't make a rushed decision.

I joined my first guild within a very short amount of time. It was the wrong guild for my character, but it was the right guild for me because I would severely doubt I would still be in game if I hadnt found thoe people who then went on to found a fantastic guild that was appropriate for my character. (Thanks go out to Goulde, Gharan and Gondric for that, Yes, blame them for me still being here ;))

That's actually not so bad. Ask around in game a bit, talk with members of guilds that seem interesting and check some guildwebsites. The guilds that are active in game are not always the same as the ones that are 'active' on the forums, so at least a part of your research has to be done in game. Also, it's not only your char that has to fit in a guild, -you- as a player has to fit in as well.

I chose a guild based on those criteria, it took me just over two weeks. Now, nearly three years later, I'm still in the same guild and I'm still very content about my choice.

There are two ways to go at it:

First create your character. Then search around for the guilds that would better suit it. Look around ingame for members of this guild (this way you'll see if the members are active during your active play time) and pose questions. If you like what you see, ask to be recruited, or wait for an invite (if you think you've impressed them enough.) If you don't like what you see, have your character be a freelancer or create a guild yourself.

Second: Look for (or create) a type of guild that thrills you. Create a character that would fit that type. Ask questions ingame and either ask to be invited, wait for an invite or invite people yourself if you have chosen to create a guild. Remember the part about making questions. It's important that your character interacts with other characters before deciding anything guild related. Unless your character is a light minded individual.

It's quite simple, as you see. Use the guild list and the search function to search for guilds.

EDIT: I'm assuming you've read the player, roleplay and guild guides already. If you haven't... Do it now.

EDIT2: My example was the first. It took me two or three months before I joined my first (and current) guild.

I can't be sure unless you mention them. I think they'll all follow a similar line of thought, though. The basis is: you need to know the guild and your character.

I think that's a good plan.  Picking a guild for "in character" reasons is a good idea as well, but I think it's pointless if you aren't having fun.  And to have fun, you have to like the people in the guild.
