gotta clean up the controls
« on: March 10, 2003, 02:33:50 am »
before this game has any shot you have to clean up the controls.

yes, im aware, this is ONLY a tech demo. so i think it should be outlined now.

switching from arrow keys to turn side to side and wasd to strafe is just lame. Should have the ability to \'steer\' with the mouse and move with the keyboard.

the game looks pretty damn nice though, runs like a pig but im sure that will get fixed along the way.

You say you know they will change it, so what is the point in posting this?

I\'d say they should fix the crazy ram problem first.  This game should not have a minimum req. of 400mb of ram.  The graphix are good, but not that good.
Somebody suggested view distance as the problem(sorry can\'t rememeber the name).  Devs, could this be the problem?  There is no draw in at all.

well, you gotta understand something first. the game as well as the engine its built on are very beta. performance improvements wont happen over night, itll be a long process im sure.

but without controls you cant have combat hehe

but yeah, the loading or objects is a bit odd. For instance in the middle of the square in front of the big orange tower. when my back is turned to the tower i have no lag. as i start to turn towards the tower it lags pretty bad, feels like its trying to load the whole building plus interiors. it just feels like its trying to to do much.

I dont know what all this 400mb required to run is all about i have 256mb ddr and it runs great
(well great compared to what ive read about other ppls performance)
and i would agree with madrebel that is feels as if its loading more than is needed (or the models are too complex)

If they change the controls they should make em like a shooter W walks forward S backpeddals A strafes right D strafes Left + the mouse should act like it does in all good FPS and if you want to use the cursor to accses the menu you press some other key

would it be possible to allow for customized controls, stored on people\'s local client.  I am thinking that would solve most of this thread\'s issues(except the RAM thing) in one swell foop.

wasd for strafing and freelook using \\ already exist.

You can already remap your keys in the keys.xml file.

Any questions?  :-)

hey, if we r talking about controls, then never in hell i want such crappy shooter ones. the only real system is a  custom setting and please when doing such a setting remember those who have a joystick or strategic commander or a 5 button mouse... *but the xml file is also quite handy...
but how to tell it that walk is right mouse and numlock toggels running on off?

Controls don\'t matter if you can\'t play.

It cuts out a certain amount of the map to make the game run better.

Nah, it doesn\'t cut out part of the game to make it run better. Jessyn was talking about the keys.xml file. Which of course is used to change the key configuration.  :)
